The action of the Auckland Racing Club Committee in granting a jockey’s license to Cusdin has been adversely criticised; but we think the local committee were justified in the course pursued. Their answer to their critics is that in the official calendar of the V.R.C. the name of Cusdin does not appear in the list of disqualified riders. The acts of a responsible body like the Victorian Racing Club should, one would naturally suppose, appear in its official publication, and in the event of an action alleged to have been taken by it not appearing in the calendar, such non-appearance must cast some doubt as to whether the step has been actually taken. As the secretary of the Auckland Racing Club points out, his committee cannot take for granted items of news telegraphed from Victoria to the local press when such items do not appear in the publication which is supposed to be devoted to the doings of the governing racing body of Victoria. The argument put forward in a contemporary which takes the A.R.C. committee to task for their action in granting Cusdin his license, that ‘ when Mata and the jockey R. Ray were disqualified by the V.R.C. they did not then require an official communication to endorse the decision but proceeded in that direction on the strength of a mere Press telegram ’ does not strike us as being such a very powerful indictment. To say that because an error was made once it should be perpetrated again is not a very sensible argument. Two blacks do not make a white, and if the A.R.C. committee were at fault in the case of Ray that is no reason why they should follow the same false path a second time.
