SOUTH AUCKLAND SUMMER RACES. The weights for the South Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Meeting, which is to be held on the 30th inst., have been declared by Mr Evett, and are set out in another column. Adverse criticism generally has a beneficial effect, and I am glad to see that the rule holds good in Mr Evett’s case, for his latest piece of handicapping shows he has returned to grace. Mr Evett has found out that Tulloch can take less than i2lb from Ida over a mile and a half, and may be congratulated upon his discovery. The adjustments for the various events must be regarded as quite satisfactory, and with good acceptances the S.A R.C. should experience a successful gathering. The South Auckland Cup of yosovs, one mile and a half, will be the piece de resistance of the meeting, but what sort of a field will face the flag for it, is difficult to foretell. The day after, viz., January Ist, there will be the continuation of the Ellerslie Summer campaign, so it is not unlikely that the number of names at present in for the Cup may be materially decreased by the defection of most of the ‘top sawyers.’ The acceptance list is not due till the 15th inst., and 1 shall defer my anticipations until that is to hand. According to the nomination list there are ten in for the Cup, the same number for the McNicol Memorial Stakes, half a dozen for the Handicap Steeplechase, eleven for the Flying Stakes, seven for the Maiden Plate Handicap, seven for the Handicap Hurdles, and half a dozen for the Ladies’ Bracelet.
