Tarcoola’s win in the Melbourne Cup should convince the Victorian public that the totalisator is the best thing for the great army of backers. Writing on this subject, the Australasian of November nth has the following :— ‘ Had all the money which was wagered on Tarcoola’s Oup gone into the totalisator, there would have been quite as many losers, but those who did back Tarcoola would have reaped the gains. The money would have been divided among the investors on the race, the stakes of the losers being cut up among the few who ‘ played ’ Tarcoola. And the winners would have received at the rate of about 200 to 1. It is a glittering prospect, and no doubt Mr Murray has the sympathy of backers of long shots in his efforts to get the totalisator legalised.
