Poverty Bay Spring Races.

The Poverty Bay racing season was opened on October 17th by the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s Spring Meeting. Good weather favoured the gathering, the racing was most interesting, and the meeting proved a success in every way. The opening day’s racing commenced with the Maiden Plate of 25SOVS, one mile, and for this event Cynosure 7.13, Glauvena 7.2, Royal 7.13, and Monaco furnished the field. Cynosure got away at the start, and was quickly followed by Royal, Glauvena, and Monaco. Entering the straight Cynosure got a little ahead, but a sudden spurt by Glauvena resulted in Mr Newman’s filly winning by a good neck, Cynosure second, and Royal third. Time, imin 40 2-sth sec. Dividend, £ 3 3 s - The Maiden Hack Scurry ot rosovs, four furlongs, was the next event, and for this nine horses started. A bad start left several of the candidates at the post hopelessly out of it, and Surmise and Kihore got into the straight together, and after a good fight Surmise won by a bare half length from Kihore, with Nehe third. Time, 51 i~sth sec. Dividend, 3s. The Spring Handicap of roosovs, one and a quarter miles, attracted seven starters. The starters were King Cannibal, Mystic, Retribution, Link, Pani, and Mahaki. Mr Gooseman’s mare Mystic was made a red hot favourite. At the start the favourite, Retribution, and Pani led the field, but at the back of the course Mahaki led by a length. As the straight was entered the horses all closed together, and after a fine fight Mystic drew away from the bunch and got past the post three-quarters of a length in front of King Cannibal. Retribution was third. Time, 2tnin 11 2-sth sec. Dividend, £2 14s. For the Handicap Pony Race of 10 sovs, five furlongs, the starters were Queenie, Venus, Moa, Merino, Kurima, and Eta. The start was a wretched one, and Venus and Queenie at once dis tanced the field, and entering the straight had matters to themselves. * After a game fight Venus led Queenia past the judge’s box by a head. Time, imin Bsec. Dividend, £t, 2s. For the Hurdles Handicap of 55SOVS, one mile, Kate, Zanzibar, Disturbance, and New Year faced the flag. Kate cut out the running until the run home, when Disturbance and New Year closed with the mare, and fought the race till the last hurdle, where New Year fell and gave the race to Disturbance. Zanzibar and Kate filled the second and third places. Time, 3min 31 4-sth sec. Dividend, £2 2s. The Hack Hurdles Handicap of iosovs, one mile, proved an easy thing for Baldie, the favourite, who went to the front at the start, and never being headed, won by a length and a half. Lottie was second and Defence third. Time, 2min ssec. Dividend, £\ 14s. For the Flying Handicap of 50S0VS, six furlongs, half a dozen started. The starters were Royal, Lady Wester, Retribution, Waterlily, Pani, and Mystic, who was a big favourite. Pani led the way until the straight was reached, and looked

an easy winner, but Mystic, under the whip, caught him, and snatched a half length victory at the last moment. Waterlily was third. Time, imin 16 2.5 th sec. Dividend, £2 4s. For the Hacks’ Handicap of iosovs, one mile, Waterlily was made favourite. Four furlongs from home lam O’Shanter went to the front, closely attended by Dangar. Coming up the straight they were well together, but Daugar, shooting to the front in the last few strides, won by a length and a half. Time, imin 47sec. Dividend, £3 13s. Sr con d Day’s Racing. The second day opened with the Second Hurdles Handicap of sosovs, one and a half miles, for which the starters were Jack, Disturbance. Zanzibar, St. Leonards, and Uncle Rastus. Jack was the most favoured, and with Uncle Rastus and St. Leonards, was the quickest away from the post. Jack led at the back oi the course, and at the last hurdle Jack and Disturbance were ahead, and a good race saw the latter a winner by three quarters of a length. Zanzibar was third. Time, 2min 57 4-sth sec. Dividend, £2 18s.

For the Second Handicap Pony Race of iosovs, six furlongs, Queenie was made favourite. A good race resulted in the second favourite Venus getting home a length in front of Queenie. Eta was third. Time, imin 24 i-sth sec. Dividend, £2 4s. For the Makaraka Handicap of 100 sovs, one mile, Mystic, King Cannibal, Pani, Retribution, Link, Mahaki, and Lord Raven were the runners. At the fall of the flag Mystic, Pani, Mahaki, and Link went away with the lead, and entered the straight in a cluster, with Mystic making big efforts on the outside. Halfway up the straight King Cannibal and Mystic went to the front, and a big race home resulted in King Cannibal obtaining a splendid win by three-quarters of a length, Mystic second, Retribution third. Time, imin 45sec. Dividend, £6 4s. The Disposal Stakes Handicap of 25SOVS, seven furlongs, produced four starters, and Bacchus, who on going to the front was never headed, won by a length. Freeney was second and Miss Fire third. Dividend, £2 17s. The winner was bought by Mr Delaney for /!7’ The Hurry Scurry of iosovs, six furlongs, was a good thing for Tam O’Shanter, who won easily from Tricky Jack and Talisman. Time, imin 19 4-5 th sec. Dividend, £2 6s. Half a dozen, Pani, Retribution, Mahaki, Mystic, Waterlily, and Lady Wester, contested the Waikanae Handicap of 50S0VS, five furlongs. The straight was entered with the. field in a cluster, but half way up Pani and Retribution shook off their attendants and fought out the issue, which resulted in a win for the latter by three-quarters of a length. A protest was entered against the winner for foul riding, but was dismissed. Time, imin 3sec. Dividend, £ll ss. For the Hacks Handicap of iosovs, six furlongs, there were eight starters, and the winner turned up in the favourite, Tam O’Shanter, who won easily from Dancing Master second, and Baldie third. Time, imin zisec. Dividend, 4s. The meeting was brought to a conclusion with the Forced Handicap of 25SOVS, one mile, which was won by Link. Jack was second, the favourite (Dangar) third. Time, imin 45sec. Dividend, £3 19s. The winning jockeys during the meeting were Cudd (4), Fussard (2), Ashdown (2), Redmond (2), Atkins (2), Ready, Wright, Hayden, and Casey one each.
