THE A.R.C. SECOND SPRING MEETING.
The first forfeit for the Prince of Wales’ Handicap of 175SOVS, ijmiles, and the Handicap Hurdles of Bosovs, 2 miles, in connection with the second A.R.C. Spring Meeting, has made a big difference in the fields for those events. Out of a field of fourteen originally nominated for the Prince of Wales’ Handicap eight horses —Brigand, Van Diemen, Royal Rose, Sylvia Park, Eve, His Worship, Yattenfeldt and Gay Deceiver, have replied to the handicapping by withdrawing, and in some instances one cannot blame them. Brigand was given a very doubtful honour when he was awarded top weight at 8.10. In a former issue I considered the son of Brigadier hadn’t a chance at the weight, and the owner appears to hold a similar opinion. His Worship has been put out of the running by the accident which recently befell him while exercising at Avondale, and Van Diemen was asked to carry 8.7, but has declined, He has not been doing anything of late, and is doubtless not forward enough to head the weights. Brown Alice now has that position with 8.7, but I doubt her ability to give weight to her field as she is asked. Ingorina has 51b less, viz., 8.2, and remembering his win over the mile and three-quarter run for the Open Handicap Hurdle Race at the Pakuranga Hunt Club Meeting with 10.7 his chance must be considered a good one. Next in weight is Ida at 7.11, and she has no occasion to be displeased with the handicap awarded her. Royal Rose was asked to carry 7.12, but has declined, although the weight was a fair one. Ida’s most dangerous opponent next to Ingorina should be Coalscuttle, who has been given a very nice weight, viz., 7.8. With such an impost Coalscuttle should be very handy. Tulloch has 7.4. In the Open Handicap, one mile, at the Hunt Club, he won easily with top weight 8.7 from Annabelle 7.4, who has 6.10 in the Prince of Wales’ race. With the difference in weight he should again head Annabelle, as he is in capital fettle. Given a start I should select Ida, Coalscuttle and Ingorina to fill the places. For the Handicap Hurdles of Bosovs, two miles, six have withdrawn, viz., Satyr, Fishmonger, Deceiver, Auckland, Ika Vuka and Bombardier. The second horse was asked to carry the same weight as Belmont, and as the latter beat Fishmonger at the same weights in the Handicap Hurdle Race at the Hunt
Club Meeting over a mile and threequarters his owner is probably right in thinking that the same weight as Belmont is too much for the longer distance. These defections leave the field at Mangere 12.5, Marechai Neil 10.9, Belmont 10.6, Despised 10.4, Fright 10.2, Tattler 9.5, and Hinemoa 9.5. The top weight I don’t fancy, but the second, Marechai Neil, reads like a winner in spite of his defeat at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting, when he ran second to Ingorina over if miles, giving away 71b. Belmont, on his running at the same meeting, should be handy, and Fright at 10.2 will make the pace warm. Hinemoa could not get home at Ellerslie with 9.7, and with 21b less I don’t now fancy her chance. Tattler, at the same weight, I take to be in the same box. Marechal Neil I regard as the winner, and the next best two should be Fright and Belmont.
The field in at present for the Auckland Guineas comprises Stanmoor, Royal Rose, Rose and White, Resurrection, St. Laura, Ben Godfrey. Annabelle, Eve and Yattenfeldt. The race should rest between Royal Rose, St. Laura, and Annabelle.
The Pony Handicap of seven furlongs, has been nicely handicapped by Mr Evett, and Pica at 9.8 heads the list. Pearl 11. has 8.11, and should prove a handy runner, and Topsy, with 8.3, on her running at the Hunt Club Meeting, should be dangerous, but the racing on this occasion will be of a different nature. We have not yet seen what the Southerner Storyteller can do, and when this pony is fully extended there will be danger for the rest of the field. Nannie, 9.0, has a big chance. Robin, 7.12, will be close up at the finish, and amongst the light weights Siwash, 6.9, reads best. Pearl II (if the pony starts) should win, and Robin and Nannie I think are the next best.
St. Kilda is in great form, and should win the Short’s Handicap of five furlongs, with 9.0, and Lady Belle, 7.5, and Gay Deceiver, 7.0, are the next best worth backing. The Flying Handicap, six furlongs, has 13 entries, and St. Kilda at 8.12 should again have a big say, with St. Laura and Lady Belle well up. The President’s Handicap, one mile and a distance, has the following entries . —Van Viemen, 8.10, Ingorina 8.8, Lottie 8.5, Annabelle 7.0, and Gay Deceiver 6.7. I think Ingorina, Van Diemen and Annabelle will fill the places.
