In the local betting St. Hippo still remains a warm favorite for the New Zealand Cup, and we have heard of the absurdly short price of 5 to 1 being taken about him. Mr Martin Taylor, the Christchurch metallician, who has been up here for the coursing meeting, has during his stay here laid the following wagers for the New Zealand Cup 200 to 16 against Hippomenes, 300 to 15 St. Katherine, 200 to 10 The Workman, 200 to 12 Prime Warden, 300 to 15 Saracen, 100 to 6 Tempest, 200 to 8 Gitano, 200 to 6 Blizzard, 100 to 6 Merganser. Our Sydney correspondent, writing on the 24th inst., quotes the following prices ruling there on the leading Spring events: — Caulfield Cup. 16 to 1 agst Sundial 16 — 1 Division 20 — 1 Paris 20 — 1 Malolo and Jeweller 25 — 1 Admiral 25 — 1 Sternchaser 25 — 1 Vakeel 25 — 1 Ronda 25 — 1 Donizetti 25 — 1 J 5 25 — 1 Birinji 33 to 100 to 1 others Melbourne Cup. 15 to 1 agst Cremome and Camoola 25 — 1 Realm, Oxide, Jeweller, Sternchaser, Vakeel 33 — 1 The Admiral, Zalinski, Sir William, Donation, Ronda, J 5, Donizetti, Tridentate, Mahee, Climax 50 to 200 to 1 others V.R.C. Derby. 5 to 1 agst Carnage 6 — 1 Light Artillery 7 — 1 Pulvil 8 — 1 Patron, Projectile, Sailor Prince 10 to 20 to 1 others Betting in Christchurch on the New Zealand Cup was very dull after the excitement of the Grand National Meeting. The following prices were quoted at the end of last week :— 100 to 12 agst St. Hippo 100 — 7 Merganser, Clanranald, Hippomenes, Saracen and Riversdale 100 — 6 Dilemma, Response, Skirmisher, Westmere and Stepniak 100 — 4 Liberator In Dunedin betting circles at the end of last week St. Hippo was favourite at 100 to 12. Dilemma had advanced to 100 to 7, and Outpost to the same price.
