Inter-Provincial [from own correspondents.] TARANAKI.

August 18. 1 Mr Keswick ’ informs me that he is feeding and working Gallant (gelding, 3 years, by Ingomar—Atlantis). Silversea (filly, 2 years, Tasman- -Moonray), and Lady Fair (filly, 4 years, St. Leger—Lady Brunette). The three-year-old filly Friskerina, by Apremont —Mireille, is in foal to Australian, and after getting over the troubles of maternity the Southern-bred filly will be put in work. I understand that all Mr Keswick’s racers will be tried in hack company first, and with this view Silversea’s name has been struck out of all classic lists. Mr Keswick has been a bit sore over he had to pay as forfeits for Silversea. as he bought her as not being entered in the race for which the forfeits becameijdue. W. Arnoldt is the trainer in the stable, and McLauchlan and a new boy named Paget are the light-weights of the establishment. We have two Wanganui Derby candidates in training here. St. Laura, by St. Leger—Miss Laura, owned by Mr F Watson, is being worked under P. Johnston’s care, and, considering that she was thrown back in her work on account of a slight accident, she is looking very well. It will take the trainer all his time to get her ready for the Derby, as the weather we have had and are still getting is quite against good regular work being given to racing stock. The other blue riband candidate is Sylvia Park, by St. Leger—Atalanta, owned by Mr J. Goodwin at Waitara West. The other day I had a look at this colt, and I must confess he looks something special. He also is backward in his condition, the cause being that the tracks have been unfit to work on through the rain.

There are several inmates of MrTeed’s stables. The hack of last season, lonic, is in tip-top condition, and will be raced early in the coming season in hack company for a start, I understand. The halfbrother to lonic, the Foulshot—lna three-year-old colt, is bigger than the bay son of The Dauphin, and if looks go for anything, which, of course, they do, he should pick up something in the way of stakes in the future. However, I

don’t think he will be seen out early next season, as it will take some time to get such a gross chap into racing trim. The two-year-old colt Australina, by Australian—lna, has picked up wonderfully in appearance during the last few months, and is furnishing into a nice-looking youngster. He is engaged in the Egmont Hack Sires’ Produce Stakes and Taranaki Derby. The other inmate of the stable is Austral, a five-year-old brown son of The Australian. Austral won a couple of small hack events on the flat last season, and this coming season he will be given a show to distinguish himself at the illegitimate game. I have made some inquiries about the work being done by Fraternite for the New Zealand Cup, and as far as I can learn the big son of The Dauphin and Sissie is progressing fairly well in his work. If he train all right I believe Fraternity will open the campaign at Wanganui, and will then be taken down to Christchurch for the Cup. There are a few who fancy this horse for the Cup, but, of course, it is rather premature at this stage to back horses about whose work you have no authentic information. Mr C. Tate has added another inmate to his stable in the shape of a trotter that was imported from Canterbury some twelve months ago.

The Waitara Jockey Club held their annual meeting on Saturday night week last, when Mr Spursdle, the hon. sec., was able to report satisfactory progress. The annual fixture of the club will be held in the early part of December, same as last year. While at Mr Goodwin’s the other day I saw Peter Jackson, the half-brother to Flukem. Peter, who is a big lump of a black horse, is by The Australian. The hurdle mare Cingalee, by Governor — Psyche, half-sister to Takapu, is also in the same stable, but she has not been well. Miss Cole is in foal to Vanguard. Mr W. Elliott’s colt Grapeshot, by Foulshot —Fishlass, is looking well, and so are the four-year-old Dicky Barrett, by Flintlock —Lady of the Lake, and the two-year-old Navigator, by Cruiser — Speculation. Charlie Crocker is in charge of the horses, and he certainly must be complimented on the evident care he bestows on them.

The stallions Lebel, in Mr Goodwin’s stable, and Howitzer, in Mr Elliot’s stable, are both looking as well as one could wish to see them. Our stallion owners will be able to show off the quality of their entires in September, when a parade will be held under the auspices of the Taranaki Agricultural Society. [by wire.] Tuesday.

Mr J. 0. Evett was elected handicapper for the Taranaki Club. Mr Hately was the other applicant. The voting in committee was 7 to 3.

’ A large number of horses have been purchased on this coast for the Auckland market by two Northern dealers.
