WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB.
(from our own correspondent.)
Wanganui, July 31. The annual meeting of the members of the Wanganui Jockey Club was held on the 28th inst. There was a large attendance. Dr. Earle presided. The Committee’s report reads thus :— Last year the Committee had to notice the death of their President, Mr H. S. Harrison; and now we have again to regret the loss the club has sustained by the death of their Vice-President, Mr J. Cameron, a gentleman who took a deep interest in all racing matters, and was one of the early settlers that raced in New Zealand, having ridden in the first hurdle race ever run in Wanganui, in 1848. He passed away full of honours and loved by all members of the community. We have also lost through death Mr E. Broughton. He was one that had taken a deep interest in the club’s welfare since its inception, and occupied the position of auditor for many years. It will be your duty to elect some qualified person to fill his place. The accounts before you reveal a loss of 47 17s sd for the year’s working, but members will take into consideration the fact that we gave away 4 5s more in stakes than last year. The improvements are nearly as complete as we can make them, and the new training tracks are now, we believe, equal to any in the colony. The balance sheet shows the club to be in a good financial position, viz., 47 10 19s to credit. The duties devolving on the committee have been more onerous than usual including the sifting of the evidence in the ‘ Emmett ’ case. The decision arrived at after careful examination of those interested has already been published, and meets, we believe, with the approval of the racing community. Messrs Chavannes, R. Higgie, Williamson, and Dr. Connolly retire from the committee in accordance with the byelaws of the club.
