The Betting Market.
The Canterbury Times , of last Thursday, reports that there has been a good deal of betting in Christchurch during the week, both on the New Zealand Cup and on the double of Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdle Race. “ The principal feature of the betting on the Cup,” says our contemporary, “is the support that has been accorded St. Hippo, and Mr Nathan’s horse is now a firm favourite.” The following wagers have been laid in Christchurch : — N.Z. Cup. 400 to 24 agst St Hippo 400 — 24 — The Workman 200 — 12 — Saracen 400 — 16 — Pegasus 100 — 7 — Prime Warden 200 — 14 — Hippomenes 300 — 15 — St Anthony 100 —2 — My Jack Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdle Race. 100 to 6 agst Norton and Kulnine 100 — 6 — Clarence and Kulnine 100 — 5 — Magpie and Kulnine The attention of the local metallicians has during the past week been principally centred in the billiard tournament at Tattersail’s Club, but still they have found time to accommodate backers on doubles of Grand National Hurdles and Steeples, and New Zealand Cup straight out. The short price of 12 to 1 has been booked about the stable double of Norton and Kulnine, which seems to be the favourite pick here, but not a few backers are nibbling at Clarence, in whose favour strong information has been received from Christchurch. Those who have seen their form at most of the big meetings in the North Island declare by Tiritea, Empire, or Gondolier for the Steeples, and Empire or Gondolier for the Hurdles, so that altogether this year’s C.J.C. Grand National Meeting should be a good betting meeting. St. Hippo keeps his place as favourite in the New Zealand Cup betting, and so infatuated are some Aucklanders about his chance that as little as 8 to 1 has been closed with. Prices on offer about the leading candidates in the Grand National events and the N.Z. Cup, and the candidates backed during the week, may be summarised thus :—
G.N. Hurdles and Steeples. 12 to 1 agst Norton and Kulnine 20 — 1 Clarence and Kulnine 20 — 1 Norton and Jack 20 — 1 Victrix and Kulnine 20 — 1 Victrix and Gondolier 25 — 1 Norton and Gondolier 25 — 1 Tiritea and Empire 100 — 3 Victrix and Kapua 100 — 3 Despised and Despised N.Z. Cup. 8 to I agst St. Hippo (tk. and off.) 100 — 12 The Workman 100 — 6 St. Anthony, Skirmisher, Riversdale 100 — 5 Westmere, Stanmoor, Pegasus (BY WIRE. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Wellington, August 2. The betting on the New Zealand Cup has been fairly spirited during the last few days, those backed being St. Hippo at 100 to 10, Hippomenes at 100 to 7, St. Anthony, St. Katherine, The Workman and Westmere at 100 to 6, and Royal Rose at 100 to 3. The Grand National double is also the medium of considerable speculation, and Norton, Clarence, Empire, Victrix and Tiritea are the horses most in demand for the Steeplechase; while Kulnine, Empire, Clarence, Erin-go-Bragh and Victrix are the favourite picks for the Hurdles.
