Auckland Coursing Club.

Second Day—Saturday, July 15.

The weather for the concluding day of the meeting was beautiful, the sun shining out brightly, and consequently there was a large attendance. The hares ran in excellent style, and most of the trials were of pretty long duration. It may be remarked that several useful dogs were thrown out for want of condition, and no doubt they will be seen in better form at the next meeting, which we are informed takes place in August. The deciding course was keenly watched, each dog having many friends, and the excitement was great when puss was seen to be going at a rattling pace, and after a fine trial, with plenty of work, the red dog won with a good balance. The Pirate evidently felt tired from his long course with Smoko. The winner is the property of Mr Beehan, the President of the club, who takes a lively interest in coursing, and was warmly congratulated by his friends. In the deciding course in the Consolation Stakes the dogs were slipped to a good hare, Carbineer winning very easily.

All- Aged Stakes. —Second ties : Blue Bell beat Rose, Master Bob beat Kotero, The Pirate beat Satyr, Smoko beat East Lynne. Third ties : Master Bob beat Blue Bell, The Pirate beat Smoko. Final:—Mr Beehan’s r d Master Bob by Rudolph—Retina beat Mr McEwin’s blk d The Pirate by Smuggler—Black Rose, and won thestake.

Master Bob led up, and after a good give and take course, won with a bit to

spare. Consolation, a sweep of £1 10s each for 8 dogs. Winner, /6 ; second, £2 10s; third, 10s. — First Round: The Rambler beat Major, Carbineer beat Pat, Laddie beat Rock, Jack Tar 11. beat White and Bluel Second Round : Carbineer beat The Rambler,. Laddie beat Jack 11. Final: Mr Edwards’ f d Carbineer, by -Nelson — Sunshine, beat Mr J. Hill’s blk and w d Laddie, by Caradoc—Munn’s bitch, and won.

The first Avondale Plumpton held in Auckland will always be distinguished and stand alone, from the fact that never before have hares been coursed to music. Whether the hares or dogs appreciated the music most we are unable to say, but we should think that a hare that died to the tune of ‘ God save the Queen ’ should be proud. At future meetings the band might favour the audience at the death of a hare with the ‘Nunc Dimittis’ or’ the * Dead March.’

The trottingstatisticsofthepastseason show that the Dunedinite Tommy heads the list of winning horses with but the Auckland Trotting Cup winner Little Ben is only £1 behind him. The Nelson horse Clyde comes third with Mr J. McKewen, of Dunedin, heads the list of winning owners with Mr A. G. Holmes, Christchurch, is second with J. Allan, of Dunedin, heads the list of winning riders and drivers with 22 firsts, C. Kerr, Christchurch, coming next with 15 firsts. In all ,£14,905 5s was given in stakes to 497 trots and galloway races, which gives an average of a fraction over 19s 9d per race. Last season 10s was given to 368 such races, an average of a little over ,£22 2s per race. The Auckland Trotting Club gave the largest amount of added money, viz., ,£2,295, and passed 962 through the totalisator.
