Cricket.

The Hawke’s Bay Pilgrims arrived on Friday morning last, and were met by the local cricketers and driven to the Central Hotel, and on Tuesday met a team from Auckland and Parnell combined, and on going in first were disposed of for 60 runs, Hill and Nicholson being the only players to get double figures, 14 and 15 respectively. The local team responded with 128, of which Ohlsen was top score with 20. The visitors fared better in the second innings, scoring 103 for 3 wickets, of which Martin contributed 31, not out. The visitors are not a very strong team, and only have about four first-class bats, but they possess in Fanning a bowler above the average. The Gordon-United match was continued on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for Gordon by 64 runs. The two clubs are now a tie, and the deciding match for the Cup will be started next Saturday, in which a good deal of interest is centred. For Gordon Williams played a brilliant innings for 49, his drives being particularly good. Callender, who has been batting disappointingly so far, came out of his shell with a hard hit 35. In the match Gordon v. Hawke’s Bay Hawke’s Bay went first to the wickets, and were all disposed of for 89, of which Hill made 33, not out, carrying his bat right through the innings, his play being about the best we have seen in Auckland this season. Callender bowled remarkably well for Gordon, getting six wickets for 42 runs ; whilst Kelly’s two wickets cost the same. Gordon hit up 130 runs, of which Johnny Fowke gave a very patient display for 50, not out. In the second innings the visitors fared somewhat better, getting 80 runs for two wickets. The Hawke’s Bay team have made themselves very popular during their stay here, and were on Sunday last driven out to the Lake by the Gordon Club, who also entertained them at a smoke concert on Wednesday evening last. The team leave for home to-morrow (Friday), and as this is the first visit we have received from our Hawke’s Bay friends let us hope that it will not be the last. On Thursday the Pilgrims met an eleven drawn from the various Auckland Clubs, and after a very enjoyable game the match ended in a draw. For Hawke’s Bay the top scorers were Martin 36, Fanning 33, and Cato, and for Auckland Curly Ohlsen played a rattling innings for 43 not out, whilst Mac Cormack contributed 24 in a very pretty manner.
