Wanganui Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting.

(from our own correspondent.) Second Day.—Monday, March 13. The second day of the above-mentioned meeting was held on the 13th inst., having been postponed since Friday, the 10th inst., owing to the very bad weather which prevailed previous to the second day’s racing taking place The attendance was very good, whilst the racing itself was of a first class order, but the dividends during the day were not high, the public managing to select the winners better than they did on the first day. The betting was very brisk, £4,334 going through the totalisator. The sport would have been thoroughly enjoyed by all had it not been for the bitterly cold wind that was blowing all the afternoon, making things very uncomfortable Half-a-dozen started for the Harrison Memorial Stakes of lOOsovs, 6 furlongs, Krina, 8.5, with the Melbourne boy Robson in the saddle, being made favourite. She once more ran a good race, but had to put up with the bad luck similar to what has lately attended her, for Eve, who was receiving 221 b from her, beat her by a little less than a length. Monte Carlo, 7.5, was third. The jumping in the Second Hurdle Race of lOOsovs, about two miles, was magnificent, not a single horse making a mistake. The leaping of the winner, Empire, 10.10, was greatly admired, and the way he romped home with a stone and two pounds more than he carried on the first day was a great surprise to many. Higgins, who steered him on both days, rode a splendid race, although the horse won full of running, but he showed good judgment in timing his run so well. Gondolier, 10.8, was second and Disturbance, 10.0, third, and there were three other starters. For the Wanganui Stakes Handicap of 200 sovs, 1-| miles, there were seven starters, only Merganser, 9.3, and St. Katherine, 8.4, being struck out. They werelmpulse, 8.5, Priest; Revolution, 7.7, F. Kiugan ; Musket, 7.5, Connop ; Rangipuhi, 7.0, Hall; Free Lance, 6.11, Davis; Sunbeam, 6.11, Johnston; and Cordelia, 6 10, Reed. Impulse, who had run up for the Cup on the first day,

was backed down to level money, Musket, who was third in the same race, coming next in popular favour. Impulse came with a great rush in the straight, and, owing to his gameness, managed to be returned the winner by a short head, but I fancy that had Musket been brought a bit earlier he must have won, as he was coming faster than anything at the finish. Sunbeam and Rangipuhi, who were a good deal fancied for both the Cup and Stakes, cut up very badly, and were never prominent at any part of the race. Impulse came with a great rush at the finish of the Cup, and the general Opinion of the majority of those who were present was that had Priest come a bit earlier he could not have lost the race, and had he won his trainer Jimmy Kean, who is very popular down here, would have been heartily congratulated, although he got his turn on the second day by winning the Stakes with Impulse and the Autumn Handicap with Lottie. The Auckland two-year-old Eve was again in form in the Nursery Handicap of lOOsovs, five furlongs, running home a somewhat easy winner by a length from. Noyade, who was giving her 41b, Banner, 7.7, was the only other starter. A protest was entered against Eve for jostling, but after being held over till the evening the stewards, after hearing evidence, decided not to entertain the protest Stranger, 11.6, was only opposed by Durus, 11.0, and Paradox, 11.5, in the Corinthian Stakes of 60sovs, one mile and a distance, gentleman riders, and they finished in that order, Stranger winning very comfortably. Lottie, 7.0, was favourite for the Autumn Handicap of lOOsovs, one mile, for which there seven starters. Krina, 7.10, was also well supported. Lottie was in front nearly all the way till the home turn was reached, but Krina challenged her. Unfortunately one of Krina’s reins broke, otherwise Lottie might not have got home by the short neck which was the judge’s verdict. Tit, 7.0, was a length away. The large field of 13 contested the Second Hack Handicap of 30sovs, 6 furlongs, and the bulk of the public’s money was carried by Bonovoree, 8.0, and Veracity, 7.7. Bonovoree won comfortably by a length from Pennant, 7.10, with Veracity a close third. Only Rangipuhi, 8.12, and Tit, 8.10, competed for the Consolation Handicap of 50sovs, one mile, and out of £B9 in the machine, Tit carried £45 and Rangipuhi £44. They ran together till the distance post, from which point Rangipuhi had the filly in trouble, and won by a length. The amount passed through the totalisators during the two days 1,042. This was nearly less than last year. At the settling over the meeting the amounts paid to winning owners were : — Captain Russell £479 15s, Mr Bradley Mr C. G. Woodley ’os, Mr J. Sutton is s » Mr G - G - Stead Mr J. E. Nugent £95 10s, Mr J. Kennedy 10s, Mr J. Kean 10s, Mr U. Marumaru Mr H. E. Calthrope ss, ‘Mr C. Durie <2B 10s, Mr T. T. Rowe £2B 10s, Mr J. Freeth Mr T. Lowry 10s, Mr R. Ross lss. Total, 10s.
