Swimming.

The Albert Street Baths were crowded with interested spectators on Thursday evening, when the Auckland Swimming Club and their capable and obliging officers got through an attractive programme without a hitch. In every respect the management was admirable, but the City Fathers should be a little more generous in the matter of light. A centre chandelier would not cost much, and would assist the spectators in distinguishing individual competitors. Mr Cook acted as starter and timekeeper, Messrs Baker and Gittos were the judges, and the Messrs Goldwater gave valuable assistance in conducting the carnival. The entries were numerous, and some splendid finishes took place. In the final heat for the Marshall-Ehrenfried Cup, 50 yards, G. Crozier (Bsecs), V. Linberg (3’secs) and J. R. Warnock (6secs) finished in the order given, but there was scarcely more than a ‘ touch ’ between the three. A. Upton (Bsecs) won the 200 yards with Hedges (scratch) second, and Hughes(3osecs) third, but the scratch man started several seconds before his number was called. The long plunge and neat header competitions were extremely good. N. Kenny won the former with a plunge of 32 feet, which with his allowance of 12 feet beat Taylor, who did 37 feet, but received only 3 feet allowance. The neat headers were magnificent, several competitors diving with scarcely the semblance of a splash. Young Cossar proved himself a past master in the art of sculling a tub, winning easily from F. J. Taylor, who after an amusing bit of circumnavigation gracefully capsized. The heats and finals of the Welcome Handicap—so named in honour of Champion Bailey—produced exciting finishes. The boys’ races were keenly contested, and a very promising lot of youngsters are training on, who in the future will doubtless maintain the proud position which Auckland holds in the New Zea land swimming championships. The proceedings were enlivened by some good music played by Hunter’s string band. The results were as follows: —MarshallEhrenfried Cup, 50 yards.—First heat : A. Upton, 3sec, 1 ; J. P. Scott, ysec, 2. Second heat: V. Linberg, 3sec, 1 ; J. R. Warnock, 6sec, 2. Third heat : G. Crozier, Bsec, 1 ; J. Crozier, 6sec, 2. Final heat: G. Crozier. Bsec, 1 ; V. Linberg, 3Sec, 2; J. R.
