TARANAKI.

February 11. Mr. N. King has been instructed by Mr. A. Standish to sell some of his blood stock on February 25, the day after our Anniversary races. The particulars of the sale are advertised in the Sporting Review. The following equines will be submitted at the hammer : —the wellknown hurdle and steeplechase mare Jenny (Puriri —Deadshot mare), whose brilliant performances are still green in the memory of sporting men ; the mare Eileen (Dauphin —Duchess), with filly foal at foot by The Australian. (Eileen demonstrated that she has pace by beating Boulanger in a six furlong “go” at the Hawera Winter Meeting in 1890.') The three-year-old pony filly Gladys (Armourer — Duchess) is another lot. She would do well in a place like Auckland or Sydney, where pony racing is established. Her breeding is undeniable, and her appearance indicates that she has pace. There will also be submitted a two-year-old filly by Flintlock —Maratau, and a yearling colt by Dauphin— Witiora. Maratau some years ago was a well-known performer in the Auckland district. The last-named, the colt by Dauphin, looks a choice lot. Mr. J. Goodwin, the first owner of the consistent Torpedo, has gone in properly

for the racing business. He has fixed up all conveniences at his farm at Waitara West for racing and stud purposes. The string Mr. Goodwin has in hand are the hack hurdler Cingalee (Governor — Psyche), Miss Cole (King Cole —Tenambra), Lebel (Nordenfeldt — Pulchra), Sylvia Park (St. Leger—Atalanta), filly by Leolinus —Outpost, and Peter Jackson, own brother to Flukem. Mr. Goodwin recently purchased Lebel from Mr. Stead for, I hear, /200, but I cannot vouch for the figure. I think that Lebel will be tried on the turf, and then sent to stud duties.

Mr. “ J. Keswick’s” two-year-old Gallant (Ingomar —Atlantis) is engaged in the Two-year-old Handicap on the second day of the Egmont Meeting. I think that the son of Ingomar and half-brother to St. Leger will win races for his enterprising owner. In the same stable is the hack Mutiny (Mute—Lady Maxwell), and the three-year-old filly by St. Leger— Lady Brunette. The two-year-old filly by Tasman —Moonray has not yet been taken in hand.

Mr. J. J. Russell has some aristocratically named steeds in his stable. There are Lady Onslow and her full brother Lord Onslow, a brown gelding Lord John, by Hippocampus, and Belle, by The Australian. The St. Leger— Musket Maid colt, who is in the paddock, has a big hock, the result of the passage down from Auckland. I would suggest that “Jay” should name her Sellenger. Mr F. Watson has in his stable the St. Leger—Miss Laura filly, bay gelding Snapcap (Foulshot —Bombshell), who is engaged at Hawera; and Cutlass (Armourer —Lottie), who is engaged in the Hack Race at the same meeting.

I saw quite a collection of blood stock while visiting a farm in this district recently. The sires Dauphin, Foul Shot, Flintlock, Cruiser, and Sovereign were all represented in their progeny. What took my fancy most was a fine chestnut yearling by Sovereign out of the Patriarch mare.

The annual general meeting of the Bell Block Racing Club was held on Wednesday. Mr R. G. Pardy was voted to the chair. The secretary, Mr A. A. Ambridge, read the report and balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £ 55 8s 1 id. After discussion both were unanimously adopted. It was decided, after a long discussion, to hold the annual race meeting this year on April 13th or 20th instead of May 24th, the latter date being considered too late in the year for a reasonable chance of propitious weather. The date will be regulated according to Mr N. King’s Waiwakaiho sale. The following officers were elected :—president, Mr Newton King ; vice-presidents, Captain Cornwall, Mr D. Teed, sen., and Mr H. J. Fisher; stewards, Capt Cornwall, Messrs F. Salway, C. Hunt, H. Julian, E. Putt, E. Wood. C. White, M. Craig, C. Lepper and M. Cunningham ; committee, Messrs H. Putt, S. Hill, D. Teed, jun., R. G. Pardy, M. Craig, W. Craig, G. V. Tate, A. Bishop, E. Wood, F. Salway. M. Cunningham, C. White and the secretary ex officio', judge, Capt. Cornwall; starter, Mr F. Watson ; clerk of course, Mr A. Bishop; clerk of scales, Mr G. V. Tate ; handicapper, Mr R. G. Pardy; timekeeper, Mr E. Wood. Mr John Skinner was appointed hon. surveyor to the club. The following programme was drawn rp, and will shortly be advertised :—Hurdle Race, i£ miles, £2O ; Farmers’ Plate, 7 furlongs, £2O; Cup, 1 mile 3 furlongs, £5O ; Trot, 2 miles, £2O ; Flying, ; Scurry, 5 furlongs, £2O ; Welter Handicap, 1 mile, £2O ; total, £175. Mr F. Watson, on account of a change of residence, resigned as a steward, trustee, and committeeman. The resignation was accepted with regret, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded him for his services. Mr Watson was re-elected starter. Mr E. Wood was elected a trustee.
