TARANAKI.

February 3. The acceptances for four events at the Egmont Summer Meeting, which will be held on February 15 and 16, closed on

Wednesday night last. In the Hurdles, 2 miles and a distance, Whalebone heads the list at 11.9, but I don’t think he can win at the impost good as he is. Paradox at 10.12 reads well, and I think she should beat Gladius on the same mark. Gondolier, the hero of so many Bracelet races, ought to be a hard nut to crack at 10.9 if he jumps well. Fishmonger also reads well at 10.7, and Marechai Neil at 10.2. The bottom weights Lady Leger and Tattler have no credentials, but the latter would be dangerous if he were a better jumper. If he jumps well on the day he will be thereabouts at the finish, but of course there is the if. To make a selection for places I would go for Marechai Neil, Fishmonger and Tattler. There are only seven acceptors for the Egmont Handicap, 2 miles, and I expect two more will drop out on final payment night. Boulanger at 8.13 should take a power of beating if well on the day, for his meritorious third in St. Hippo’s New Zealand Cup cannot be overlooked. Rosefeldt at 7.13 if well would take a lot of doing, for she has demonstrated that she can get 2 miles by running third in British Lion’s New Zealand Cup, but she has been under a cloud so long that persons don’t consider her chance much. However she may take it into her head to gallop at Egmont, and effect a surprise. Prestige is not troubled with weight at 7.12, and I expect him to run a big horse if his trainer lands him at the post fit and well I think that it is the winding-up process that troubles Prestige and not the lack of pace or staying power over 2 miles. If brought to the post he will run well. I think Morion is an overrated horse, and I don’t care for his show at 7.12 ane his Takapuna penalty. St. Katherine is a speedy filly, and reads well at 7.6, but a shorter journey would suit her I imagine. The chances of Musket and Durus I will not discuss as I am sure that they are outclassed, although a great many knowing people have faith in the former. My straight tip is Boulanger, Prestige and Rosefeldt. There are eleven accepted for in the Waimate Handicap, 7 furlongs, and of the bunch I like Ua, Poinsettia and Monte Carlo. In the Welter, one mile, there are eight. If well Fraternite should run a big horse with 10.11, and next to him I like Fleta 9.0 and Durus 8.12. (By Wire.) Tuesday. Morion was fancied down here for the Egmont Handicap, and he will carry a good deal of public confidence in the machine. As the the Sapling Stakes wi[l be a walk over for Eve, the Committee have decided to put a five furlong Hack Race in place of this race. The Hack Flat, one mile, promises to be a great race. From the full list of 26, I fancy Melas, War Cry, and Union Jack. In the Hack Hurdles I fancy Cingalee and Respond. Rae passed through here to-day with Morion, Marechai Neill, and Stranger. A big meeting is anticipated at Egmont. F. Stohr left to-night for Auckland with the trotter Ike.
