When on the turf Raglan proved himself a thorough honest horse and first-class stayer, able to last to the end of a Cup race, carrying weight and defeating the best horses in Auckland. Figaro out of Brunette, by Riddlesworth. The Premier is by Malton (imported son of Rifleman) out of Revoke, the dam of Trump Card and Amazon. Gownsman (imp.) was by Surplice (winner of the English Derby) out of Tomyris, by Sesostris out of Glaucus mare. Phoenix, the dam of St. Patrick, won the Pahautanui Stakes at Wellington and the Consolation at Masterton in 1875, beating large fields in both races. She also ran second to Cocksure in the Hutt Park Stakes, third fo.r the Provincial Plate, and third for the Consolation, the pair in front of her in the latter being Fishhook and Pungawerewere (both Dunedin Cup winners).
