The Doncaster Champagne Stakes of 500 sovs., about 5 furlongs, run the day before the St. Leger, fell to the Duke of Portland by the aid of The Prize, by Bend Or—Satchel, who was ridden by J. Watts. Mr. D. Baird was second with Silence, by St. Simon - Palmflower, and General Owen Williams third with Perigord, by St. Simon—Effie Deans. There were four other runners, including “ Mr. Jersey’s ” Milford. The Prize and Silence wero equal favourites at 3 to 1 each. Satchel, the dam of the winner, is by Galopin out of Quiver, the dam of La Fleche. The Prize was beaten in two races early in the season, but her victory now made the fourth race in succession that she has won. She is engaged in the Derby, Oaks and St. Leger of next year.
