Palliser, 7.8, was unplaced in the Woodlands’ Handicap, one mile, at Maribyrnong, Melbourne, on the 27th ult. The winner was Mr. S. G. Cook’s The Magistrate, 6.13, who is by the Panic horse Pell Mell out of Lady Susan, the dam of Colstoun. Writing to the Australasian a correspondent signing himself “ Whalebone,” says:—“ Permit me to draw the attention of those interested in breeding to the fact that Quiver, the dam of this wonderfully good performer, Le Fleche, is almost full sister in blood to Musket, thus —Quiver, by Toxophilite out of a 'daughter of Young Melbourne and Brown Bess ; Musket, by Toxophilite out of a daughter of West Australian and Brown Bess—both Young Melbourne and West Australian being sons of Melbourne. To show that breeders should not be in too great 4 hurry to discard a mare on accoent of her want of success at the stud, it may be noted that Quiver was barren four years (not in succession), and had foals to seven different horses prior to breeding Memoir and La Fleche to St. Simon. So far as I can discover, none of the preceding seven were winners. St. Simon appears, however, to have given the desired ‘ nick.’ ”
