ATHLETICS.
At a very successful meeting of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club held at the British Hotel on Wednesday evening, Mr. James Coates declining re-election as president, accepted the position of a vice-president, to which he was unanimously elected. Mr. R. Garrett was elected president, and in him the club have a thorough athletic enthusiast, who will attend all meetings and support the club in every way. The report and balance-sheet, submitted and adopted, appeared in these columns last week. The following officers were elected :— Patron, His Excellency the Earl of Glasgow; vice-patron, the Mayor (Mr. W. Crowther); president, Mr. R. Garrett; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. H. B. Coates, J. F. Logan, and B. J. Esam ; secretary, Mr. J. Halyday, jun. (reelected) ; treasurer, Mr. B. J. Esam (reelected) ; committee, Messrs. Speight, Upfill, McKinney, Hutchinson, Cooper, Burton, Smith, Powley, Edwards, Dixon, Nicholson, Service, and Lecky, the three last-named gentlemen being the representatives of the Cycle Club. Mr. A. T. Firth was elected captain, and Mr J. G. Firth handicapper, of the Cycle Club. It was decided to leave the appointment of general handicappers to the committee. It was decided to request the retiring president, Mr. Coates, to visit Mr. Edwards’ photographic studio and have his portrait taken for the club - room. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring president and committee, and the handicappers, and the sum of £lO was voted to the secretary for service rendered, and £5 each to the treasurer and two handicappers.
