Last Wednesday afternoon Mr. Albert Barns sold by public auction on behalf of Mr. E. McElwain the following thoroughbred stock :— Empire (by Natator — Gladiator mare), six years old, fetched the sum of being purchased by Mr. D. Hogg; Epsom, five years old, by Ascot —Sunshine, in foal to Natator, was knocked down to Mr. Woods of Palmerston North for the sum of ; a nice looking chestnut colt, 3yrs, by Ascot — Sunshine, full brother to Epsom and halfbrother to Waterbury, was knocked down to Mr. W. Chapman for —(judging by the looks of this colt I should say that he will make a name for himself when asked to race) ; a bay colt three years old by Natator—-Welsh Maid, by Day Dawn out of a Glaucus mare was purchased by Mr. Woods of Palmerston North for £zz ; the thoroughbred trotting sire Quicksilver was purchased privately by Mr. Russell of Brunswick Line for the sum of At the same sale on behalf of Mr. D. Scally, the well-known sprinter Rufus, by Puriri —Toi-toi, was put up, but failed to realise the reserve put upon him, £zo. Mr. Sam Powell’s thoroughbred sire Ascot is now stationed down at Rangitikei on Mr. Donald Fraser’s run, where he will serve all that gentleman’s mares along with a few outsiders. The well-known hack Daisy Clipper has been nominated for some of the big races at the forthcoming Wanganui Spring Meeting, but I fancy she would have done better in the hack class.
