WELLINGTON.

August 29. P. Murtagh with Sir Garnet, and A. Peters and his son, H. Peters, with Bide-a-wee, left by this morning’s train for Marton to fulfil engagements at Rangitikei Hunt Meeting on Thursday. Both horses are very well, though Sir Garnet looks a bit fine after his Canterbury trip.

Bide-a-wee will start for both Hurdles and Steeplechase, and I should not be surprised to hear of him. winning the double. He is said to be in better fettle than he was at Tauherenikau, and if so he must take a lot of beating. My own' opinion is that he is worth backing for both events, and if anything beats him in the Steeplechase I fancy it will be Gladius, who is said to be very fit, but cannot be said to be a reliable jumper. It has been decided by the Wairarapa R.C. Course Committee to recommend to the club that a new grandstand be erected on the outline plan submitted by Mr. W. C. Chatfield, architect. Other improvements are to be made on the Tauherenikau course as the funds will permit. The Taratahi.Carterton Hack Racing Club held its annual meeting on Saturday at Carterton. A very satisfactory balance-sheet was submitted. It was resolved to hold the Spring Meeting on 9th November and to admit the public free to the course. This was tried last year and proved a great success. The acceptances for the Rangitikei Hunt Steeplechase Meeting were received in town to-day and are very satisfactory. There are 9 each for the Open Hurdles and Hack Hurdles, 10 each for the Hunt Cup and Flying Flat, 11 for the Open Steeplechase, 7 for the Hack Flat, while there are 10 entries for the Members’ Steeplechase. The Doctor. 12.8, and Billy, 11.7, are my selections for the Hunt Cup ; Bloomsbury, 7.7, for the Flying Flat; and Sunbeam, 8.13, for the Hack Flat It is likely to be a very good meeting. The Feilding Hunt Club —a Hunt Club without a hunt, whose programme has very improperly been passed by the Wanganui Jockey Club —has secured fairly good entries for its meeting, to come off on the 7th September. It has 11 for the Hack Hurdles, 8 for the Open Steeple, 4 for the Final Hack Flat, 8 for the Welter Handicap, 8 for the Hunt Cup, and 10 for the Bracelet. The entries for the Open Steeple are Marama, Matchless, Moemoe, Dangerous, Evelyn, Haeremai, Sir Garnet, Flintstone. The weights are due on or about the Ist September, which, I suppose, means as soon as the Rangitikei results have been digested by the handicapper.
