Metropolitan stakes.

On Tuesday, 13th. September, the great event of the day is the Metropolitan Stakes of 1500 sovs., 1-J miles. Formerly this event was two miles, but this year it has been reduced to a mile and a-half. This has no doubt been done to give it more popularity amongst owners, there being so many horses fitted only for the shorter journey. It seems almost a pity, though, that the distances are year by year being made shorter for all these principal events. Wherein will we prove the horses’ stamina if these races are to become merely “ spurts” and “ sprints,” instead of trials of speed and endurance ? Realm, 8.4, and E.K., 7.2, both read well on paper. I shall allude to this event in a future issue.
