WANGANUI.

July gth. At Mr. F. R. Jackson’s Horse Fair, held on the 25th June, the chestnut gelding, Darwin, by Mufti (sire of the well-known cross-country horse, Jupiter) dam, Miss Elswick, by Elswick out of Chandler’s dam, was put up at auction, but failed to find a purchaser. This horse is a grand stamp of hunter, being a splendid jumper and also possessed of a good turn of foot. He has been up for fifteen months and only started twice, the first time being beaten by Ngaruhoe in the half-mile race, gst up, at Waverley, it being the fastest half-mile run on the Waverley course. At Fielding he finished third to Claude in the Hurdles, miles, when not properly well. Darwin’s dam, Miss Elswick, is a half sister to Miss Phantom, dam of O’Rourke. At the same sale Mr. E. J. Chapman’s horses, Strephon (by Papapa) and O’Rourke (by Daniel O’Rourke) were also put up for sale, but no purchasers were available for them. Both these horses performances are well known on this Coast, Strephon last season being the boss hack on the Coast, and as he is a good jumper he should not be long in finding a new owner. O’Rourke ran a dead neat in the Hack Race at the Wanganui Spring Meeting. Mr. Chapman’s reason for selling these horses are that he intends giving up racing at present. I am informed on good authority that the Rangitikei Racing Club intend holding a Spring Meeting this year, but in what month is not decided, but most probably it will be held somewhere near the time of the Wanganui Spring Meeting.

Mr. Herbert Jackson has retured to Wanganui from Australia, having sold Queenslander for the sum of Queenslander had hard luck in finishing second in most of the races he started for there. His performances are as follows : —Won Steeplechase at Bacchus Marsh, second in Steeple at Caulfield Boxing Dav, and second in Steeple at Flemington, New Year’s Day, and several times unplaced. Mr. R. Wheeler has sold Te Ata to a Napier sport for the sum of Te Ata won the Trial Hurdles at the late Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase Meeting. The Maori Band from Wanganui was in attendance at the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club’s Meeting, where their playing was highly appreciated. Mr. Moore, of Kai Iwi, who bred Whiteman (now racing in Australia in W. H. Keith’s name) has two more youngsters by Sou’wester out of Whiteman’s dam, and I am informed that they are both promising colts. Whiteman is a full brother to Kai Iwi Lady, who was disqualified at the Turakina Meeting after winning the Maori Race, it being proved that she did not belong to a native.
