“ Torpedo ” claims the credit of having brought out Norman L. Gurr, of Wellington, as a sprinter, when quite a lad. Gurr ran some brilliant races at the Caledonian sports in Wellington on New Year’s day, from scratch, placing himself on each occasion. He won the 440 yards easily, giving from 18 to 28 yards to a large field, and is recognised as by far the best amateur runner in the Empire city. The Sydney Referee is responsible for the following : —A funny story is going the rounds of Brisbane in regard to the disqualification of a jockey. It was said that he was paid £lOO for losing a race, and the disqualified jockey having received the amount safely in his pocket then said, “ Well, I am down for life, and £lOO is not enough. I must have £4OO more in less than half an hour or I will hand in the names of those I acted for.” He got his demand, but declined to go to India, as requested. He is now showing in great form round Brisbane, and says he will have to be pensioned for life.
