CRICKET. But for a strong and black Nor’wester, Saturday would have been a perfect day for cricket. However a good attendance witnessed the finish of the matches which in every instance ended as predicted in our issue of last week. But few ladies were present, the counter attractions of lawn tennis and the boisterous weather accounting for their absence. SENIORS. Auckland v. Parnell. —O’Brien and Taj lor the not outs —continued their innings, the former making some very pretty strokes and 4he latter playing a steady game. After increasing his score to io, O’Brien was badly run out, an unfortunate termination to what promised to be a good innings. Beale after making a couple of runs was well caught by Prichard in the long field. Taylor was not out with 7. and the total reached 109, or 4.2 to the good. Howard with 4 wickets for 40, and Lawson with 2 for 17 were the most successful bowlers for Parnell. In the second innings, Mills with 14, Lawson 32—both lbw to R. Neill—and J. Young 12, batted well, but with two absentees the score only reached 73. R. Neill captured six wickets for 33 runs. Two fine catches were made, Hatton at point snapping up the dangerous Gardiner off a hot one, and R. Neill disposing of Hoile by a brilliant catch at mid-on. Arneil and T. Neill hit off the 32 required without the loss of a wicket, the latter collecting 18 in good style, and the former 13. Auckland therefore won by 10 wickets. United v. St. Mary’s-Onslow.—United continuing their innings raised the total to 206, both MacCormick and Harvey increasing their not-out scores to 24 and 35 respectfully. To this formidable total St. Mary’s-Onslow replied with 40, Stemson doing the principal damage with 6 wickets for 16 runs. United therefore won on the first innings by 166 runs.
