TARANAKI SPORTING NOTES.
(from our own correspondent.)
New Plymouth/ Sept 15. Cocksure, by Towton —Certainty, is standing the season in this district. I saw him in town ' on Wednesday, and by his looks I should say he ought to get some serviceable stock. It is reported that Nox, a Waitara pony, is looking remarkably well. The local sports are taking a keen interest in the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, as so many Taranaki racers are nominated. Some seem to think that Rodney will have a show in the five furlongs if he goes up, but he will have to gallop better than he has ever done to win in the company he will meet in Auckland. I think those horses that will go up from here will remain for the Onslow Trotting Club meeting. Sole Bros, want a purchaser for the four-year-old Speculation, by Governor—Duchess. The price they ask is £2O only. The mare sustained a rather severe injury to one of her fore-legs last season, from which she has not yet properly recovered ; hence the price. They intend to keep Atlantic for jumping competi--tions this season. The stallion Lionel, by Leolinus —Petroleuse, will have a good season this year according to accounts. Bill Russell has got him looking Well. j.,../, »
Tuesday, September 22. The trotters Charlie and Fibre and the ponies Lady Onslow and Rodney were shipped for Auckland per “ Gairloch ” to-day, to take part in the Auckland Trotting meeting on Saturday next.
Mr. F. Watson’s trotting mare Fair Nell, by Irvington, dropped a bay filly the other day, the sire being Emmason, by Berlin. The same owner is breaking-in a three-year-old filly by Armourer, dam Lottie.
