TARANAKI SPORTING NOTES.

(from our own correspondent.)

New Plymouth, August 211. It is the intention of Mr. George to use Vendor, by Resolution —Confident, for stud purposes this season. The nuggetty son of Resolution should get some useful stock. The renowned Emmett is still in the hands of “ Patsy ” Riall, but I don’t think he will sport silk again. Pat reckoned he had a big thing on when he first brought out the son of Puriri (?), but, excepting a bit of a coup at Waverley, the chestnut gelding did not do much.

I hear that Jervey George will have a string of six for the ensuing season, viz., Vendor (who, I presume, will be run at the back end of the season in view of his harem duties), Durus, Melas, Armoury, Maroro, and a filly by Armourer, dam Awatea. He will need to pull off a few events to make the season pay. The Egmont Club are advertising for appli - cations for the position of handicapper to their Club, the remuneration offered being £lO a day, which means £3O a year. There will he quite a host of applicants for the position, judging by the remarks one hears in the street. The party who took Jenny to Christchurch, and the mare herself, are expected home per “ Takapuna ” to-morrow. The trip must haVe been a pretty expensive one. The Bell Block Racing Club intend to improve their course before the next seasoii. This Club’s meeting will, I predict, become a favourite one, falling as it does on the Queen’s Birthday—a day on which no other Club neater than 100 miles holds a meeting on this coast. The sports at the “ Hub of the Universe I mean Stratford—intend to go in for a race meeting. A club has been formed, and a 'track selected in the Recreation Grounds. Their fixture, I think, will be November 9. I wish them luck. The racing season will be opened early, Considering the Auckland Spring meeting in September and the Hawke’s Bay and Wanganui meetings in October. The form of most of the two and three-year-olds will be got at milch better than heretofore.

The report that Jay Russell will visit your city soon is about correct, as he does not believ'd in letting his mokes eat their heads off in the stable. He must have a “try ” even if he does “fal!.” . . # Is it the Auckland Pawa that is nominated at the Rangitikei Hunt Club meeting ? “ Mr. Keswick ” has a nice yearling by Apremont, dam Moriul. AuguSt 24. The steeplechase mare Jenny has returned home, looking very sore. £ls° was fhe best offer made for her.
