BOXING.

The complimentary benefit to be given to “ Sid ” Barnes champion light-weight of New Zealand on Monday evening next, promises to be a most interesting affair. Messrs F. and W. Paltridge are announced to fight four rounds. Campbell the winner of the light-weight championship v McKenzie four rounds. Bucton will try and give Nolan his quietus in a like number, whilst Frank Heath will tackle Nicholson who defeated Collins in 6 rounds, but perhaps the most interesting tussle will be between “ Dick ” Sandall the champion amateur of N.Z., and “ Sid" Barnes, who is very sanguine that he can stand up to “ Dick ” for the four rounds he undertakes. At the Zealandia Boxing clubs rooms on Saturday week last the first round of the Amateurs light-weight tournament was brought off, for a handsome silver cup, and medal for the second man presented by the promoters, for whom Mr. T. Collins is the active and obliging secretary. The first bout was between Warner and Campbell, when the latter was declared the wiriner by the Referee for a foul after the sth round. The second set to was between Bucton and McKenzie and 8 rounds were fought, according to the conditions, without either gaining an advantage, and it was declared a draw. McKenzie is yet quite a lad, and was giving his man nearly two stone, but stuck to his opponent in such a manner as to call forth the admiration of the numerous spectators present The other competitor Robinson drew a bye. On Monday evening last the second 'and final round was decided, McKenzie and Bucton were first brought together to decide their draw, in the presence of a fairly good audience, Constable Hobson being present on behalf of the Police, but nothing occurred to call for his slightest interference, Bucton was seconded by Paltridge (who announced his willingness to fight the winner for a side wager ■ dr a troohy), McKenzie had the assistance of Smith. * Mr. Saxon was chosen referee and Mr. Collins timekeeper, and they were accepted throughout by each of the combatants. McKenzie again looked very confidentand came up to his man smiling every round and stood

out his “ eight ” by clever dodging and activity, Bucton on the other hand gave the impression that he meant business, but his only chance appeared to be in getting his antagonist in the corner ; there is no doubt he did nearly all the fighting but the “ boy” deserves great praise for sticking to him so well. The referee gave the fight to Bucton. The next bout was between Campbell and Robinson, and resulted in quite a farce, the latter showing no knowledge of boxing, Campbell “ went for him” and practically settled him in the first round, he stood up another round and then refused to stand up again. The two victors decided to finish off their deciding fight after another spar by two volunteers had taken place. When Campbell and Buckton came up it was readily seen that the latter was too much handicapped in weight, and Campbell won after /the fifth round. The cup and medal were presented to Campbell and Buckton in a complimentary manner to both competitors and promoters.
