ENGLISH SPORTING NOTES.

The Sussex fortnight was brqught to a successful close at Lewes. The weather has been perfect throughout, and though some little rain fell in the morning at Lewes, the racing was interesting enough., Sea Song won the Coombe Stakes by a head from Spotted Beauty and Chesterfield —-a colt by Wisdom. Bramble beat Martenhurst by three lengths in the Priory Stakes. Muley won the Club Open Handicap by two lengths from Gay Hampton, who, as usual, refused to try when the race seemed a certainty for him. It must be a thankless office running such horses, but as Martley has taken to winning, some of the other queer-tempered ones may in time do the same. Alchemist woh the Mile Selling Plate easily. Racing near London has not many in the month of August, nevertheless there was a fair attendance and some good sport at Kempton Park., Minuet won the International Breeders’Two-Year-Old Stakes for Alic Taylor ; but the most important event was the City of London Foal Stakes, for which Mr Brampton's Oddfellow was made favourite. He was easily beaten by Mr. Houldworth’s Ponza, however. The two days’ racing at Redcar were chiefly remarkable for the successful riding of Bruckshaw, who had half-a-dozen successful mounts, and the victory of John Osborne’s Punster, ridden by “The Pusher”’ himself, in the Redcar Two-Year-Old Staked. At Windsor the Berkshire Plate fell to the Duke of Beaufort’s Simonetta.

At Stockton, Queen’s Birthday—who had, twice scored at Redcar during the previous week —carried off the Great Northern Leger from a field which included Childebert and Magazine. An accident befell Memoir. She hit her leg, and the joint filled, with the result that she was absent from exercise for several days, and retired to 8 to 1, Surefoot taking her place as favourite. Mr. C. Perkins’ Hutton Conyers won the Zetalant Plate at Stockton, and Mr. Abington rode four winners at Wolveri . hampton. One of these was Ashton, on whom he scored again at Lichfield. A curious circumstance occurred at the last named meeting. After one race neither the winning jockey nor any of the others could draw the proper weight. On examination it was found that some one—either by malice or as a joke— had attached a piece of lead to one of the scales. T. Loates still heads the list of winning jockeys, but has nothing like so good an average as last year. ? George Barrett is second, some way behind. At York, in spite of Creator’s defeat at Stockton, he was made favourite for the Prince of Wales Plate; and, after a good race, secured’ this valuable stake for Mr. J. Lowther. The ‘ Yorkshire Oaks fell—as was expected?—to Mt. ' Houlds worth’s Ponza, and the Lonsdale Stakes to Eaglesham, Mr. McGregor, which came in first, being disqualified’ for boring.

At Wellington Park, Yattacy (by Yattendon) has pr oduced a chestnut colt to Nordenfeldt. This is-the last- of Mr.- Morrin’s brood-mares to foal * • >* * i
