Dr. Warre, head master of Eton, is circularising old Varsity “ Blues ” with the object of raising a fund to provide a challenge cup to be rowed for in eight oars by the Universities of Australia. In his letter Dr. Warre says, “It is thought that the presentation of such a cup might not only help to raise the standard of amateur oarsmen in the Universities of Australia but also be appreciated as an evidence of kindly interest taken by the University oarsmen of the mother country in the rowing welfare of their brethren in Australia.” The suggestion has been cordially received by the University oarsmen, and a committee is being formed to carry out the scheme. The race for the Queen’s Cup took place at Cowes, on August 5 th. The following were the entries: —Samoend, cutter, 88 tons; Amphitrite, schooner, 131 tons; Aline, 149 tons; Shiela, 45 tons; May, 38 tons (yawls). The race was started in almost a dead calm but the wind soon freshened and then died away again. The Samoend had to allow the Amphitrite 2 minutes 40 seconds, and succeeded in winning the 50 miles race by 4 minutes. Only these two completed the course.
