AUCKLAND CUP AND STEEPLECHASE

The entries for this year’s Auckland Cup and Steeplechase must be considered very satisfactory. Those for the Cup show a total of 37, an increase of six on last year’s nominations, while in the Steeplechase there are twentyseven horses entered as against twenty-four last year. All the principal stables in the colony, with the exception of Mr. Dan O’Brien’s; are represented, and if Mr. Evitt succeeds in making a flattering handicap it is probable that one of the largest fields that ever started in this event will face the starter. Mr. G. G. Stead is represented with two, Medallion and Palliser—the two colts which fetched the highest prices at the Auckland Stud Company’s sale in January, 1889. Palliser is by Nordenfeldt out of Quadrant’s dam, Radiance, and has not yet sported silk. Mr. S. H. Gollan has four engaged, viz.: Tirailleur, Jet D’Eau, Medjidie, and Leonie. Medjidie is a three-year-old colt out of Amohia, the dam of Tigredia. Mr. P. Butler by St. Leger out of Escutcheon’s dam, Rosette, and Leonie is a filly of the same age by Leolinus has three nominations, Crackshot, Bay King and Thackeray, and the best of this trio on the day will need some beating. Mr. J. D. Ormond

of Hawkes’ Bay, has nominated St. Andrew and Queen of Trumps, and another owner hailing from the same district, Captain Russell, is represented with Katinka and Aronoel, and yet another o.wner from that district, Mr. G. Hunter, intends to have a cut in with last year’s Wellington Cup winner, Cynisca, and the Albany mare, Whisper. E. Cutts, the Canterbury trainer, has entered Dudu and Cruchfield, while Mr. Douglas has nominated Waitiri’s half-brother, Kapu, by the Mute. Ben Trovato is another Southern nomination, he is a three-year-old colt by Apremont out of Flattery. The Hon. G. McLean has a single entry opposite his name in St. Malo, by Gorton —Legerdemain. Wolverine and Wayland (Le Loup —Remnant) are nominated by the Dunedin sportsman, Mr. C. Turnbull, and the only other “ foreigner ” in the list is Mr. J. Munn’s horse, Strephon, hailing from Hawkes’ Bay. Of the locally owned horses, Mr. “W. Somerville ” is represented with Hilda and Cissv, Mr. Bobbett with Patchwork, Major George with Reprisal, Mr. J. C. Davis with Leolantis, Mr. Hedger with Antelope, Mr. Dickey with Cambria, Mr. E. Yuille with Cvnical, Mr. Walters with Leorina, Mr. “B. Thompson” with Warrior, Mr. “E. James with The Dreamer, Mr. McHugh with Cartridge, Mr. R. Williams with Glaucus, and Mr. J. Roulston with Belmont.
