COURSING.

Considerable interest has recently been taken amongst lovers of the leash in the coursing match which eventuated at Mr. McLaughlin’s estate, at Papatoitoi, on Wednesday last. A meeting of persons interested was held at Kidd’s Commercial Hotel on the evening previous to decide the draw, with the following result: —

1. Mr. S. Ferguson’s (ns) Plumpton (by Union JackLeonora) v. Mr. W. Powell’s (ns) Rocket (by Union Jack —Olivette). . 2. Mr. J. Wheeler’s (ns) Jack Tar (by Union JackMeteor) v. Mr. L. Brennan’s (ns) Scout (by Smuggler—Como). 3. Mr. W. A. Fenton’s (ns) Rose (by Blue Cap—Lass) v. Mr. J. Cawley’s (ns) Market Maid (by Market Day—Mavis). 4. Mr. J. Campbell’s (ns) Jack Tar 11. (by Union JackRose) v. Mr. Wakefield’s (ns) Union Jack 11. (by Union Jack —Rose).

Wednesday proved an excellent day for the match, about 80 persons, principally coursing enthusiasts, taking advantage of the beautiful weather to be present. The officers were : — Judge, Mr. Henderson ; Slipper, Mr. Wheeler ; Flag-steward, Mr. Quigley ; Stewards, Messrs. Bull, Fenton, Beehan, and Wakefield. Hares were plentiful, but unfortunately there was too much cover, and several got away. The first go between Plumpton and Rocket was an “ undecided” —the pair were then slipped to a good hare, Plumpton leading up and winning easily. In the second course, Jack Tar led up but fell, allowing Scout to get in and beat him. Rose and Market Maid were then slipped Rose being quickest away and leading to the hare, Market Maid then got in and did most of the work, passing the hare to Rose, who killed. The judge awarded to Market Maid. The next course was a pretty even one between J ack Tar II and Union Jack 11. After a lot of give and take -work, the judge decided in favour of Jack Tar 11. In the second round Plumpton met Scout. Plumpton got away first, led to the hare, did nearly all the work, and won the course easily by finishing with a kill. Market Maid and Jack Tar II were then slipped to a strong hare, and provided the most interesting contest of the day. Jack Tar was fastest from the slips, and led for some distance, when Market Maid got in, and working beautifully was left a handsome winner. Mr. S. Fergusson’s blk. and w. dog Piumpton, by Welcome Jack — Leonora, and Mr. James Cawley’s blk. b. Market Maid, by Market Day—Mavis, divided the stake.
