FIJI.
The new Governor of Fiji, who succeeds Sir George O'Brien, is Sir Henry Moore Jackson, K.C.M.G., who has had considerable and varied experience of responsible colonial appointments. He is the son of Bishop Jackson, of Antigua, and served for some years in the Royal Artillery, attaining the rank of Captain before he retired. His first colonial appointment was as Private Secretary and A.D.G. to Sir Henry Irving, who was then Governor of Trinidad. For two years he held the same appointment under Sir John Glover, the then Governor of Newfoundland. In 1880 he was appointed Commandant of the Sierra Leone Police, after which he held in successiou the following appointments : A.D.C. and Private Secretary to Sir Henry Havelock, Commissioner for Turks and Caicos Islands, Colonial Secretary for Bahamas, and later for Gibraltar, and for the last few years Governor of the Leeward Islands. Matters in Fiji are somewhat unsettled, and his predecessor left much to be desired, so that the new Governor will have an excellent opportunity of proving his administrative abilities, and making use of the experience he has acquired elsewhere.
