We reproduce here some more of Mr. A. Gill's coastal photos. The first represents simply a bit of rocky coast at Puketeraki, Otago, a few scattered rocks with
just enough movement in the water to make the music
our souls love as
we wander at our leisure along the golden san d. What memories of days gone by does
that pile of rocks call up, when, bare footed, with garments bifurcated or otherwise, carelessly tucked np and persistently coming down, we braved the briny element and clambered about, making at every turn new and astounding discoveries in natural history.
The Red Beach at Waikouaiti forms the next subject, a stretch of red sand bordered by rugged sea : worn rocks which have stood for centuries the fierce onslaught of the
roaring breakers, lashed to madness by the fury of the winter's gale. But our photographer chose a time when the tide was out and all was calm. On the rock in the foreground is seated the small boy, content at present to sit and gaze quietly at the glory of the summer sea. But he will not long sit so. The keen little fox terrier under the rock knows it, and is watching eagerly for his young master's next move. Another scene is that noble pile of rugged rocks known as Matanaka Cliffs, also at Waikouaiti. What
ages and ages of gouging and carving by the most powerful and cunning artificers in Nature's extensive workshop it must have taken to produce the elaborate and infinitely varied fretwork shown in the original of this photo !
