AUSTRALIA.

The Federation of Australia has started the prophets prophesying a very bright future indeed for the land of the Golden Fleece, and it certainly appears to be a safe thing to predict. In the very near future its population should be largely increased by immigration. Hitherto it is argued that Australia has not shown signs of developing into a powerful maritime nation. The typical Australian is pictured as much moreat home oh a horse than in a boat, but that is because his work has mostly lain in that direction. He is essentially a man who can turn his hand to anything, and when occasion arises, it will be found that he is equally as good on the briny ocean as he has proved himself on the rolling veldt.
