Bayne, photo. A FAMOUS MAORI CHIEFTAIN. In commemoration of the visit of H.M.S. New Zealand to Auckland, the Victoria League is presenting to the ship a copy of the portrait of Tamati Waka-Nene, a former chief of the Ngapuhi and Ngatihao tribes, who received a silver loving cup from Queen Victoria and was appointed honorary post-captain in the British Navy and aide-de-camp to his Excellency the Governor, Sir George Grey.
