February 28. At Lancaster Park. On Monday afternoon at Lancaster Park the J. C. Williamson Comic Opera Company gave a theatrical carnival in aid of the Scott memorial fund, which was a most entertaining ami highly successful means of raking fundrf. In th* morning (a* an advertisement) a costume procession paraded the city, heade I by a lorry carrying “The Girl in the Train” brass band. The procession drew up in Cathedral Square, contributing a few musical items, while circulating eubacription boxes, and making announcements regarding the wonders prepared for the afternoon carnival. ceseion, of courwe, attracted hundreds of followers. In the afternoon the attendance at the Park was very good, and the entertainment provided excellent. A lengthy and varied programme was gone through. The obstacle race caused much amusement, and was declared by some people to have been “the funniest thing ever seen in Christchurch.” The promoters and actors taking part in the carnival deserve to be (highly congratulated on the satisfactory result of their efforts. The takings amounted to over £450. A Farewell Tea. On Thursday afternoon Mm Stead (Strowan Park) gave a farewell tea for Mre H. Wood, who leaves for England early next week. Several songs were charmingly sung by Miss Knight, and Mr Scott Leslie entertained the guests with some very clever stories and character sketches. Mrs .Stead wore a gown of lotus blue satin relieved with cream lace, large blaek hat with ostrich feathers; Mrs Henry' Wood, royal blue crepe gown with lace collar and cuffs, blue hat with wings; Mm Vernon, black voile and lace, blaek hat with purple pansies; Mrs Elworthy, black satin and ninon with silk coat, turban hat of black tulle; Miss Elworthy, black ninon gown veiling wide cream lace, black tagel hat with shaded stocks; Mrs G. Gould, black satin gown relieved with cream lace, black hat with mount; Miss Gould, pale apricot sponge cloth frock, hat with white feathers; Mrs Loughnan, greysponge doth coat and skirt faced with white, black hat with lancer feather; Miss Loughnan, floral muslin frock, pale blue and Tuscan hat; Mrs Palmer, black silk and lace, black bonnet; Mrs Wardrop, dark blue and white spotted foulard coat aaid skirt, white hat with lemon ribbon; Miss Lee, blaek and white striped coat and skirt, small blue hat with shaded flowers; Mrs A. MurrayAynsley, grey cloth gown, blaek hat wreathed with flowers; Miss MurrayAynsley, grey voile gown, grey hat with black and white mount: Mrs Denniston, black and white cheek voile, small blaek hat; Mm R. Allen, mole satin gown with Oriental embroidery, large flat hat wreathed with flowers; Miss Ogle, blue serge eoat and skirt, hat with shaded ribbon; Mrs Wilkin, grey and white striped Sicilliene coat and skirt, black hat with blaek and white feathers; Mia? Wilkin, cinnamon Shantung coat and skirt, cinnamon hat with wallflowers; Mrs J. Gibbs, gown of cream lace veiled in black ninon, picture hat with white flowers; Mrs Merton, grey tweed coat and skirt, blaek and white hat wijdi feathers; Miss Merton, blue serge coat and skirt, tagel hat with floral mount; Miss Craeroft Wilson, grey whipcord eoat and skirt, small grey and blue toque; Misses Burns, grey tweed co-ats and skirts, grey and black felt hats with feathers; Mrs Phillips, grey striped cloth coat and skirt, violet hat; Mies Phillips, mole whipcord coat and skirt, large blaek hat; Miss M. Phillips, blue serge coat and skirt, blue felt hat with wings; Mies Cotterill, dark blue shot taffetas coat and skirt, blue hat wreathed with white clematis; Mrs Beals,-dark blue serge coat and skirt, white hat with straight ostrich feathem. Others present were: Mrs W. Wood, Mis,? Wood. Mrs Campbell, Mrs Day, Mrs J. Vernon, Mrs Reynolds. Miss Humphreys.

Croquet Tournament. On Tuesday afternoon Mrs Denniston gave a small croquet tournament at the United Courts. The prize was won by Mrs Murray Aynsley. Others present were: Mrs M. Anderson, Mm G. Merton, Mrs Stead, Mm A. Reeves, Mm G. Hclmore. Mm Bloxam, Mrs Jennings, Mm J. Gibbs. Mrs Black-burn, Miss M. Cocks. Mm Dixon. Mrs Stringer, Mrs Graham, and Mrs Butterworth. An afternoon tea was given on Wed-

nesday- by Mrs W. Raymond (St. Albans). Tennis. Amongst the tennis ho.ste.saes of the week were Mm Reid (Merivale), Mrs Blunt (Merivale), Mice Ogle (Lower Ricearton), Miss Wilding (Opaw-a), Miss Clampbell (Avonside), Mrs Wigram (Park Terrace), Mrs Hehnore (Fendalton), Mrs Beswiek (Merivale), whose guests were; Mr, Wigram, Mrs T. Cowlishaw, Mrs Blunt, Mrs W. Hehnore, Mrs A. Campbell, Misses Wilson, Harley, Denniston, and Humphreys (2). Personal. Miss Wood has returned to Christchurch from Dunedin.

Mre and the Misses Phillips (The Point) are- spending a short til le in Christchurch. Visitors from Christchurch to Dunedin for the race,? included Sir Geirgo Clifford, Mr Pyn ( Mr and Mrs C. .’Jalgety, Mr and Mrs J. Buchanan, Mrs Dam-pier-Crossley, Miss Chapman, and Mist Moorhouse. Mre W. Montgomery (Little River) has been spending a short time in Christchurch.

Mrs Derek Westenra, “ Calma ” (Dunsandel) has been staying with Mrs Nicholls at Mansfield Avenue, Christchurch.
