WELLINGTON.

(By

ROMULUS.)

Lyall Bay Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club. THE official ceremonial in connection with -the above institution was performed by President J. R. Stansell, at Lyall Bay, on Saturday week in the presence of nearly three hundred bowlers, tennis and croquet players and friends. Khandallah tried conclusions with the local bowling section, while Puketoa (Mitchelltown) had a friendly tennis match with their hosts, the visitors being defeated by the narrow margin of four games, 61—57. It is worthy of note that the first match decided on the new courts was that in club’s combined Handicap Tournament, when Hamer and Miss Rigg were successful in their first round. Brougham Hill Handicaps. Three of the five events have been completed, leaving only the men’s singles and combined doubles, and it is possible that the former too may have been disposed of by the time these notes appear in print:— LADIES’ SINGLES. In the combined doubles, very little progress made since results last appeared in this column. General Notes. J. M. Power and H. Ponanga have decided upon Pah'r.tua for their New Year festivities. They are two fine fellows, and as such the writer can assure them they will not regret their visit to the local elub’s tennis tournament. Both are in pretty fair form (though Power has been ill lately), and should give a good account of themselves if not overburdened by the handicappers. , J. B. Parker’s respective partners for the men’s and combined events at the Hastings Club's Championship Tournament, at New Year are H. Symonds and Miss Zita Wellwood, both well-known Hawke’s Bay players. Christmas greetings have reached “ Romulus ” from G. W. Callender and Peter Clarke, the former in London, and the latter in Almonte. Ontario, Canada. Clarke’s post-card is very -interesting and reads: —

“My kind regards and best wishes to you and -mutual tennis friends for Christmas and New Year. We have had a great summer in the forest, and on the lakes, and are now commencing a strenueus winter.” (He is with Dr J. M. Bell on geological survey work.) W. Crewes (Newtown) and H. Fathers (Victoria College) are trying their luck at the Rangitikei Championship Meeting, commencing at Marton on Boxing Day. J. 11. Dick (Newtown) is also a likely starter. Mr T. 11. Jones, who was hon. secretary of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association a few years ago, but had dropped out of the game for the last couple of seasons, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the executive caused by the retirement of Mr C. A. Lawrence. The Britishers at Brisbane, C. P. Dixon and Co. had an easy task in disposing of Queensland, whom they defeated by 8 rubbers to nil; 16 sets to 1; and 102* games to 48.
