HORTICULTURAL NOTES.
Importance of the Compost Heap. The compost heap must not be neglected. as so many are liable to do. All the weeds, clippings, and sods which have been gathered should be heaped together and frequently turned, in order to decompose ami break up the mass. Attention to this important matter will ensure a good lot of soil suitable for growing seedlings and for potting.
Cultivation of Loganberries. Loganberries, as the strong young canes are produced. should not be allowed to trail on the ground, else they will root. Thes » young canes should be tied up to stakes.
loosely: they will carry fruit next season. When loganberries are neglected, the young growths—where sutticiently strong very quickly get on the soil, take root rapidly, and become a nuisance. When properly cared for. it is an excellent fruit, well worth attending to.
Spraying Gooseberries. For leafspot on gooseberries, -pray the bushes after the fruit has all been gathered with Bordeaux paste, or. where large plantations have to be gone over, the ordinary Bordeaux formula 4. 4. 40 will 1 e suitable.
Spraying Plums, Pears and Cherries to Destroy Leech. Many amateurs are inclined to allow this troublesome warm weather pest to work its own sweet will on the leaves <»f their fruiting trees. Spraying or dusting. however, for their destruction is very easy and simple. In small gardens, with only a few young trees attacked, dusting by means of muslin or scrim or slug gun with line, dry slaked lime, at intervals, will soon remove the pest. Larger trees can be sprayed with hellebore powder, loz to two gallons wat<*r.
