RACING FIXTURES. December 26, 30, January 1. 2—ARC. . Summer. December 27. 28, 31—Auckland Trottiu| Club's Summer. (January 10, 11—Whangarei R.C. Annual. January 23—Bay of Plenty J.C. February 6—Te Kuitl R.C. Annual. February 12. 13 —Rotorua y.tr. February 21. 22—South Auckland R.C. March 15, 17—-Otahuhu T.C. Summer. lApril 0, 12—Auckland Trotting Club’f Autumn. In the South Bon Ton is a good favourite for the Auckland Cup. In the event of Monorail starting in tne Auckland Cup he will have the services of the Southern lightweight, 11. Watson. * Brookfield, the full brother to Gloy, lias been added to the list, and will in future race as a gelding. So far no rider has been secured for Go’.dSixe in the Railway Handicap, in which the >on of Gluten must be accounted dangerous The Birkenhead—Pearl Necklet filly, which was reared at the Ascot Farm, has gone Into 8 Chaafe. Jun.’s. stable to be prepared for her racing career. The services of J. Conquest have been secured for Monoplane in the Auckland Cup. He will probably ride the daughter of Mono form a couple of pounds overweight. M. Hobbs’ team for the A. R.C. Summer Meeting will include Vice - Admiral, Martel, Mowbray, and I’eg. Provided nothing unforeseen occurs. Tiresome will be given a run lu the Auckland t tip. So far no rider has been secured for •he daughter of Seaton Helaval. A two-year-old colt by Sfonoform—Graceful is the latest addition to D Moraghan’s string. The colt is a likely looking youngiter, and on appearances should be useful. Ttie victory of Sleacornbe lu the Hack Hurdles at Rangitiket -was welt anticipated J way from the course, and Ids victory was the means of a lot of money changing bauds It transpires that it i* F. E. Jones who has been engaged to ride Vice Admiral in the Auckland Cup, not F. D. Jones, as previously stated. The foals at Glenora Park by imported Marble Arch are as fine a looking lot as have ever graced the Papakura Estate, and there is not a weedy one amongst them. judging by the number of horses working at Ellerslie there will be a large percentage of Auckland owners represented at the Thames meeting on the 26th and 27th inst. The Regel gelding Iloanga, which has been spelling for some time, has resumed work at Ellerslie under the charge of C. Coleman. Iloanga looks big and well after his rest. J. Buchanan, who had been retained to ride Waimangu in the Auckland Cup, has accepted the mount on La Reina In that event This should st al! doubts at rest about WaHnangu being a starter in the Cup. It is wonderful how the public go off a ti-nse. In tlie Rangttikei Cup Mendip was made .-. go.«! favourite, failing t, run prominently, ’nit on he se-tuid | av w,.n the p:.u -ipa, even:, paying „ two -figure d vidend. The Southern liorae Masterpie-'e, which Is «ie of the favourites for the Auckland Cup. covered a round of the tan at Ellerslie recently at half pace Mnsteride-e looks bright ami inmtciilnr. and shows no effects of his racing at the N Z. «'up meeting Advices from Hastings state that the New Zealand Cap winner. Midnight Sun. has uOt been going as well lately as his admirers could wish, but there is nothing seriously wrong with him. and, so far. there is nothing to itidlcgte that he will uot see the post.

The Soult mare Mon Ami. which won , double at the Raogltikei Meeting, u one of the oldest mares at present racing. Moa Ami carried silk on U occasions last on.

the only winning bracket going to her credit being the Borough Handicap at the Manawatu R.C. Autumn Meeting.

The Auckland Cup candidate I-abour Day was amongst the runners for the Greatford Stakes on the concluding day of the Rangitikel meeting, but the best the daughter of Soult could do was to run third with 8.2 in the saddle to Mendip (8.3) and Bonn e Boy (78).

The first of Elysian’s foals, which are ■running at the Ascot Stud Farm, are au exceptionally fine lot, and the colt by the young son of Soult from Lady Hester would ornament any stud. Elysian, notwitlistandiug a fairly heavy season, looks splendid, find grows more like his sire every day.

The Leoiantis mare Miss Livonia is the latest reenrit to Hie ranks of jumpers, and was given her first lesson at the game last Thursday, when, with A. J. McFlimi in the saddle, she was schooled over a couple of the pony hurdles at Ellerslie, shaping satisfactorily for a beginner.

The Soult mare Miss Winsome does not appear to mend her ways, and gives everyone connected with her a lot of trouble. .Some mornings it is only with the greatest difficulty she is induced to leave her box, while on the track it is only now and again she will do her best.

Backers of Waimangu for the Auckland Cup will not be pleased to leara that the son of Soult is giving his trainer some cause for anxiety. Waimangu was galloped on the tan at Ellerslie lately, but did not walk away as freely as his admirers could wish.

walks off the track showing signs of uusoundness, Tor at times marvellous reeov

Although Master Wairiki tias uot won a race since lie landed the Plumpton Handicap at Avondale in the spring of 1911, Mr Morse is not inclined to take any libeity with -him. and in the Christmas Handicap on the opening day of the A.R.C. Sum-Tier Meeting has asked him to concede weight to several good performers.

During a visit to Glenora Park on Monday. I bad a look over General Latour, which has just finished a light season at the stud. The game son of Soult looks remarkably welt, and only a very short preparation would be needed to fit him for racing. Mr Walters has not yet decided whether to give General Latour another chance to win further honours under silk, but it would occasion no surprise were he to be found in commission again when the autumn rolls roii nd.

The mishap to Waimangu will cost early backers of doubles a lot of money, for the Auckland Cup winner of 1910 was picked out for favourite immediately the weights appeared, and maintained his position as one of the first fancies right up to the time of bis retirement. It is not always advisable to write a horse out of a race when he

cries have been made; but from what can be gathered It is unfortunately almost a certainty that M aimangu's days on the race track are ended The mishap, coming oo the eve of an important race like the Auckland Cup. is’ cruel luck for Mrs Leonard, for the victory of her colours for the second time would have been very popular. i * 1 WAIRARAPA NOTES. The Wairarapa horses Vocation, Imagination, Exertion, Sir Knox. Sir Solo, and Sinapis will compete at the Manawatu meeting on December 26tli. 27tb, and 28th. The following Wairarapa owners won stake money nt the Felldlng meeting W. H. Bidwill £165, A Wall £2<>, F. Dorset £2O. Mr. J. Macara has handed Kingl Ilorl over to J. Cooper for preparation. The non of Conqueror and Culverin will lu future figure In the race books as a gelding. The success of Imagination nt FeikUng came as n surprise to her owner (Mr. Bld will), who did not consider that she was capable of getting to the end of a mile and fifty-four yards. Mr Bill will did not back tils mare

The Wairarapa horse Otter met with a alight mishap at the Felldlng meeting, which will necessitate bis bring given a few weeks' rest. —

Lord Soult was sold at th* Woodville races to a Christchurch - sportsman, who intends having the son of Soult trained on the New Brighton beach. The price was £2B.

Sir Solo ran consistently at both the Felldlng and Woodville meetings, and his success in the big- money at Woodville on Thursday was well deserved, especially as he had only been beaten by the narrowest of margins the previous day and at Feildhig on the Saturday. Deeley took no risks of being blocked again, and kept the Sir Laddo colt well in the van all the way. Longstep was up to her usual capers at Woodville, delaying the starts, and getting away badly. Despite this, she managed to run second to Lord Possible in the Railway Handicap.

The Saracen filly Suratnra got a verybad run in -the Flying Handicap at Woodville, and but for this would probaldy have landed the stake. Suratura was also interfered with in the Nikau Handicap at Feilding on the Monday previous. Figaro, the first thoroughbred horse imported into New Zealand, was owned by the late Mr. C. It. Bidwill, of South Wairarapa, ou whose property he died in 1856. It is proposed to remove his bones to the Tauherenikau racecourse, so as to commemorate an historical event in the annals of horse-breeding in New Zealand. Figaro was by Operator (imp.), his dam being Adelaide, by Theorem (imp.), and was foaled in 1539, being bred by Mr. J. Icely. in NewSouth Wales. Mr. Icely sold Figaro in 1840 to Mr. James Whatt, of Wellington, from whom Mr. Bidwill purchased him. The following nominations have been received for the Wairarapa County Cup at the Taratahi-Carterton meeting on Boxing Day:—Negative, Bally Shannon, Ceylon, Byron, Sir Knox, Undecided, Beacon, Rill, Sea Queen, and Leapuki.

The nominations for the Wairarapa Cup (1J mile), to be decided at the Wairarapa Racing Club’s meeting on January Ist, are as follow:—Sandstream, Sea Queen Undecided, Mira, Obllgant, Mon Ami, Merrivonla, Sir Knox, Sinapis, Imagination, Beacon. Sir Solo. Bally Shannon, Ceylon, Rill, Abercoed, Odessa. Allegory, and Hinemanu. These horses, with the addition of Lady Kilcheran, Waipunui, and Leapuki. have been nominated for the big money on the second day.

Sinapis, which has t.een having a rest since the Riccarton and Marlborough, meetings, was put info work again this week. Glenfern is not running up to last year’s form. He was able to run oat a good six furlongs, but lu his races this season he has generally assisted in driving home the field. At "Woodville his running was very disappointing. He has got into a lazy habit at the barrier, and moves away very slowly.

The chestnut filly Bandore (by Gold Reef -—Mandola), owned by Hou. J. D. Ormond,

does not strike one as being more than a » very nrdfuary galloper. judging by her WooArllle form. In her two races at that meeting she finished in the ruck, a long way iiehtnd the placed horses.Mr. George ' Hunter possesses a smart* looking colt hi Mysteriareh (Mystification— Stepdaughter), which showed a good turn of speed, at Woodville. R. Gooseman is training the colt, which should prove very hard to beat when he gets into proper condition. * * * TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH. Sir Geo. Clifford’s teom for the Auckland rummer Meeting will comprise M is:erpi?< e, Winning Way, Nightwatch. Brown Owl, Glenfinnan. and Heatherbrae. and they le.t for Ellerslie to-day in .-harge of H. Cutts. On Saturday M. Hobbs will leave with .Vice-Admiral, Mowbray. Martel, and Peg, while about December 16 R. O’Duniie:! w II take his departure with five of the Yaldhurst division under his care, these being Bon Ton, Bon Reve, Los Angelos. Culp it, and Oxen hope. It is possible that Bon Reve may be sent first to Palmerston North to contest the Palmerston North Stakes, a race which, on form, looks an easy th.ng for the unbeaten son of Dreamer. The only drawback is the breaking away from the other members of the team. ‘Should Bon Reve take part in the Manawatu m»e;ing he will have ample time to get to Ellerslie to contest the Derby and Royal Stak *s. All the Riccarton horses under orders for Ellerslie seem in good health and condition, and they should make up a strong contingent, capable of capturing a few of the good races. Vice-Admiral has been doing some really good work of late, and It is considered by many that he will inn well in the Auckland Cup. He is ceitainly looking very bright and muscular, and should he strip all right on the day his chance cannot be ignored. He will he ridden by F. E. Jones, who will probably ride the remainder of Hobbs’ team when the weights suit.

Unless Bon Reve takes pait in the Palmerston North Stakes there will be no Canterbury horse at the Manawatu Summer Meeting this year. The West Coast circuit, at one time a favourable hunting ground for Riccarton trainers, has also been left pretty well alone this year, there being only one or two nominations from this quarter. The bulk of the local stables will, however, be strongly represented at the Dunedin Summer Meeting at Christmas, after which they will divide forces, some going on to Invercargill and others doubling back to Oamaru for the New Year holidays. As is usually the case at this stage of the year, Riccarton will be quite deserted. The Hororata Racing Club was fortunate in experiencing such Ideal climatic conditions for its animal meeting, held on Saturday, for this no doubt was an important factor in drawing a record attendauce. It is gratifying to find the suburban clubs meeting with such splendid success this season, and it is to be hoped that the tide of prosperity which appears to have set in their favour will long continue co fl >w. The race course ami appointments at Hororata have never given satisfaction to the club’s patrons, and it would probably be a wise move if the Club’s executive rose to the occasion and transferred its property to a

much more favourable location near tbe Coalgate station., where 1 believe c au ideal for a racecourse* Is 111!!? <? *“, ”t manage to secure this proer *«t such buildings as would meet the Immediate requirements of their patrons, there Is every reason for believing tnat its annual meeting .would become the popular of bur couufry fixtures The defeats of Gnome and Query l u tbelr respective engagements at Hororata cost ■dickers a fair amount, for both horses were supported in a manner suggesting that their defeat eould not be brought about. Just why this opinion was formed was a little difficult to follow, for Gnome has run most disappointingly In most of his engagements this season, and Query was giving away no less than 221 b in weight to May Dalrymple, a useful performer over sprint courses.

Mumura s victory in the Hororata Cup would be a source of great satisfaction to his owner, Mr. A. Kuight, and trainer, D. Boerts, for it is a long time since the rather erratic son of St. Ambrose scored a win, although his failures have sometimes resulted iu his running a good race, namely, his second in the Ota Io Plate to Ceylon. Mr. Knight is one of the best sportsmen we have, and his successes aro always deeervedly popular, and one could wish they were more frequent. Andrae, which won his first race at Hororata, is a three-year-old by Sarto— Brisa, and is a half-brother to Apollodoris, which wen some good races for Sir George McLean a few years ago. Tbe colours of Mr. H. Friedlander were successfully carried at Hororata by the three-year-old fillies May Dalrymple (by Stepi.lak—Miss Dalrymple) and Editah (by Soult —St. Edith). Three others of Mr. Friedlander's horses—Early Morn, Gay Soult, and Duchess of Cornland—-have been thrown out of training, and sent home to their owner's place at Ashburton for a respite. The win of Cosy Corner at Hororata was largely anticipated by Ricearton trackwatchers. and her private form has suggested that she will be capable of better things in future. She was sent to tbe West Coast some time ago, but partly Through inexperience she failed to reproduce her. best form. She is a three-year-old filly by Bonifvrm, her dam. Ingleneuk, being a smart sprinter a few years back. . -

Goldfinch, a gelding r>y Gold Reef—Miss Rale, which has been raced several times in Canterbury of late, was given a turn over the hurdles at Ricearton on Monday*. The first hurdle was got over all right, but coming to the second the stirrup-iron broke and L. Hegarty parted company with his mount. The horse afterwards' jumped a hurdle in slovenly fashion.

White Cockade injured a leg rather badly whew competing in the hurdles on the second day of tbe South Canterbury meetin'. He Is progressing as well as can be expected. though it will b« some considerable time before he will be well enough to be given any but the very lightest exercise. Coroniform, which claims engagements at. the Dunedin and .Southland meetings, is bowling along in good style. The poisoned leg which troubled him some time ago Is now air right again. ■ ... Mr. J. M. Mahon,- the New Zealand Racing Conference’s first stipendiary steward was present at the Hororata meeting. He was not acting in his official capacity, but was merely ’taking bis flfst' opportnnity of seeing a-race meeting in New Zealand. 4 4 4 RANGITIKEI RACES. ... MARTON.
