Comments on Inter-club Matches (November 9). SENIOR. Brougham Hill and Victoria College w ere the successful teams in the opening matches, AVellingtou succumbing to the former team by two rubbers, while V. C. defeated Newtown by a single set (the rubbers, three all). F. Ellers signalised his reappearance, to match tennis by a decisive win at the expense of J. A. B. Howe (16 games to 9) who took the first set, but could only secure three games in the next two sets. It is a significant feature of Eller's winning ellorts that he invariably loses the first of three sets. The remaining rubbers went as expected, H. Brown losing but two games altogether in his bout with Hunter, Roberts (B. II.) also having an easy passage in his match with Stranger, a new man to senior tennis — really a class above him. Jeffery (Wellington), as usual, put up a good tight, and the writer knpws no player who goes so close- to winning every time, yet loses so often. This time his performance, against 11. V. Howe, the elever B.H. man, was one of Jeffery’s best ellorts in Wellington. (Howe, 6—4; 6—5.) In . the Newtown-Victoria College match Martin was the only Newtowner to win a rubber in the singles, though the club secured both doubles. The value of combination was again demonstrated iu this match. Cleghorn ami Parker, after defeating Redward and Simpson respectively in the singles, were defeated later in the first doubles, although, as a matter of fact, the Collegans ran the opponents to 6—5 in the concluding set, and actually scored 15 games to 13 in the rubber. There was nothing sensational in the ladies’ division. AVellingtou A defeated A’ictoria College without loss of a rubber, and only one set; Miss Tennent running Mrs. Goldie to a three-set match in the third rubber. Newtown, after losing the first two singles against AVellingtou B, steadied down, and thenceforward did not lose another rubber. Mrs. Grady’s performance for AVellingtou was the best of the afternoon, defeating Miss Robinson in straight sets (12 games to 2). Miss Webb (AVellingtou), was successful against Miss Dempsey, while for Newtown, Mrs. Bell and Miss Powell won their singles, the elub’s representatives also annexing both doubles.
