October 19. Amateur Performance. Most successful was the amateur performance of “Beauty and the Beast - ’ staged at the Empire Hall on Friday and Saturday night by the Craven School girls. There was a large attendance of parents and friends of the pupils. The seenery was beautiful, particularly in the second and third scenes—the garden of the Baron von Thiergarten. Of the characters, Miss E. Cargill, as Baron von Thiergarten (‘‘The Beast”), accounted for a very clever piece of acting. Others were: The Baroness von Thiergarten (his mother), Miss H. Cargill; Mr Bands (an American broker and commission agent), Miss J. Miller; his daughters, the Misses A. Perry, L. Loughnan, and Al. Armstrong; Johann (a gardener), Miss N. Armstrong; Franz (a gardener’s boy), D. Abraham; Fanny (a maid), Miss M. Meadowcroft; and a host of little elves. The dancing of the Misses Peggy Abraham, Lexie McDonald, and Nancy Lyons was very graceful and pretty. The play was written by Miss W. Fraser. Amongst (he audience I noticed: Mr and Mrs H. Cooper, Mrs Jack Strang, Mrs Loughnan, Dr. and Mrs Wilson, Mrs Stowe, Mrs McDonald, Miss Dundas, Mrs and Miss Melt night, Miss O. Smith, Miss A. Guy, Mrs and the Misses Morrah, Miss Mawhinney, Mrs Bosworth, Mrs and Miss Warburton, the Misses Moore, Miss Lyons, Miss Armstrong, Miss Bond, the Misses Mason, Mrs 11. N. Watson, the Misses Abraham.

Children’s Dance. All Saints’ Children's Home had its sixth birthday party on Wednesday afternoon. It has been the custom every year for the Home to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the institution. The weather was glorious, and a large concourse of people assembled for the occasion. each bringing a useful present for the Home. The Bev. and Mrs H. G. Kosher received the visitors at the entrance. The matron, Miss Foley, and assistant matron. Miss Knight, were kept busy receiving the presents. A stall Jadened with articles made by the children was exhibited, and many bought by the visitors. The Mayor, Mrs J. Nash, and Mrs Nash, Mrs Lionel Abraham, Mrs I’orrett, Mrs Ward, Mrs Holmes, Mrs Ak-Rae, Mrs Penny, Mrs IT. Akers. Mrs Rendell, Miss Drew, the Misses Ganstad, and many others were there. Personal. Miss A Collins, Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs Clere. Mrs Spencer has returned' from Wellington. Mrs Cutfield (New Plymouth) is visiting her mother, Mrs Stephens. Mrs and the Misses Coombs have returned from a short visit to Wellington. Mr ami Mrs R. S. Abraham and Miss Abraham have been staying in Napier.
