I and 2 Auckland R.C. Summer. The SI. Paul gelding Captain Paul is now an inmate of J. Chaafe’s stable. The hauler Lillie Jim is now under It. Ilall’s charge at Ellerslie. The Native, which was recently sold at auction for 375gus, is to be taken across to Australia. Sir George Clifford has named his yearling /oil |,y San Francisco Madowla Dun I’ranclsco. Fuss is doing •considerable schooling at Tlllerslie. and her displays over the small fences have been very satisfactory. Mall King, whose turf career is now at an end, won twelve race's of a total value of J? >. It is reported by Press Association cable from Sydney that Malt King is amiss, and that bis racing career is probably finished. The purchaser of Royal Scotch and Ireland (Mr. S. P. Mackay) is the former owner of the Auckland-bred Soultlinc. The Auckland Prince Soult was scratched for all engagements fit the New Zealand Cup meeting on Tuesday. A lialf-broiher to Surplus ilias joined F. McMnnemin’s stable. The gelding is by a Sylvia Park colt out of Bonus. Three new arrivals at Ellerslie are Zennie, Toreador, and Mahonga, which are now under the supervision of P. Jones. The Pukekohe-o wned horses, Soidtoria and Delegate, have resumed work again at Ellerslie, and are back in their old quarters at F. MeMauemin’s. A mare by Cuirassier Gypsy is the latest to be schooled al Ellerslie, and her efforts over the pony hurdles have been quite sa t isfaelory. II: is reported in the South (hat The Native has again changed hands, this time ’die new owner being aimuuuced as Mr F MvKclvic. .... Convoy’s half brother, leel, was given a chance to jump the big fences at Ellerslie, but he made a very poor showing and refused the second fence of the double. Lady Lucy is to be mated this week with Maniapoto. She is to fulfil her present • •ngagiunents, including the New Zealand < lip, but if she proves in foal she will be finally retired to the stud next autumn. So far the two-year-olds (hat have represented the lion. J. ]>. Ormond this season, <‘re ver.v moderate, and it does not look as if Hie karamu stable would be as strong as usual. The San Fran mare llinemanu, which followed up her victory al Hastings by winning the County Hack Handicap at Napier Park, is decidedly useful, and should be heard of again shortly. On Thursday morning at Ellerslie Tul Cakoban, Fuel, and Captain Jack were schooled over a round of the big country. The trio fenced well, the first named pair in particular Jumping in good style. S. Walker is now located at Ellerslie with Mr. Edwards’ horses. One of tin* ten in, n mare by Cuirassier Gipsy, was ■schooled over the hurdles al headquarters vn Thursday afternoon, fencing fairly well. The Royal Fusilier filly Beldame is giving her trainer a lot of trouble with her knees, and will probably be muted this •uMison with Finland, although an effort will be made to gel a race out of her. A New Zealand Cup candidate which can have no chance on recent form is Alimgaroa, ami both at Hastings and Napier Park the daughter of San Fran ran dlsa ]>poln tingly. The Sir Lancelot mare Routine, which claims an engagement in the New Zealand Cup, ran a very bad race in the -Park Stakes nt Napier Park, and on that showing can have very little chance in the Southern two mile race. The three year old gelding Multiply was <uadc a very utruiq; order for the Ahuriri

Handicap at Napier Park on Saturday, but the best he could do was to run second to another three-year-old in Merton, to which he was conceding a stone. F. Loomb intends taking Sea Fink. Monorail, Scorch, and Lady Alicia to the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting, which opens on the 24th inst. C. Brown will ride them in their engagements. 'The object of taking Lady Alicia is tu see if travelling will quieten ’her. Sea Elf, owned by Mr .1. J. Craig, while being exercised at Ellerslie received an injury that will pevent her racing again. The ligaments of her forelegs were torn away from the fetlock, and although the mare’s galloping career is at an end, it is hope that she may be saved for stud purThe Soult — Monoquil colt Salta no. purchased by Mr. T. 11. Lowry at the Glenora Park sale last year for 125gns, made his first •appearance under silk at Napier Park when he ran third in the JuvenLe Handicap. Saltano is a fine contented colt, and might be useful toward the hack end of the season. 'The Great Northern Hurdle Race winner of 1911, Whakaweira. made ids iirst apeparanee of the ' season at Napier Park, when lie contested the Tarada’e Hurdles. The son of Pilgrim’s Progress ran a good race, considering his bulky condition, and should not be long in striking form. When Marimba was left at Hastings it was stated the event would have been a moral for her had she left the mark. The daughter of Birkenhead was saddled up for the Ahuriri Hack Handicap at Napier Park, and was a good second favourite, hut though she was well placed in the early stages, was never in it when Hie -actual racing commenced, and finished some distance back. The Royal Fusilier mare Beldame, which was very near the first flight of two-year-olds last season, made her first appearance under silk as a three-year-old at Napier Park, when she was saddled up co contest the Railway aHndicap. Beldame showed a lot of pace in the early stages, and led to the turn, where she died out of it. The daughter of Royal Fusilier does not appear too sound in her knees, and a lengthy turf career is not predicted for her. The published statement that Bobrikoff broke down while contesting the Park Stakes at Napier is incorrect. The son of Finland was a bit sore, but no worse than he was after his race at Hastings a few days previously, and when the writer saw him in the paddock at F. Davis’ on Wednesday last, he appeared to be as sound as ever he was. Bobrikoff, it is thought, is troubled with rheumatism, and is sore one day and quite free the next, according to the weather. Provided nothing unforsecn occurs, his trainer is quite confident of getting the black champion to the post for his spring engagements. For an inconsistent performance that of Golden Loop at the Napier Park Meeting on Saturday would he hard to boat. In the Hack Hurdles, Hie first race of the ■day, the son of Lupin was never near his lieid, but about an hour and a-haif later, in the Taradalo Hurdles, never gave his opiamonts a chance, winning easily The crowd made a bit of a noise, and the stewards held an inquiry, but accepted the explanation offered. Beyond tlie fact Hint Hie explanation was accepted, no information was given to the Press. The gelding Shoemaker, which won the Greenmeadows Hack Hurdle Race, was bred in the Waikato, and is by the Gl. Northern Derby winner St. Crispin, out of Lady Bell. Shoemaker was bought at a sale at*the Harp of Erin st aides for a little over 20gns, but after being put into work was found to be badly affected in the wind. An operation was performed, and the gelding is now alt right again. His victory op Saturday whs something in the nature of a fluke, but the son of St. Crispin is a finf big horse, and should win again when the company is not too select. The Napier Park Racing Club’s Spring Meeting was a record for the club, and the totallsator investments showed an increase of £2.217 on last year. As is the case with the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, the facilities for backers are altogether inadequate, and a 10l of crushing and crowding is necessary before one can get Io the windows. Why these clubs do not enlarge their totallsator houses is something of a mystery. A decent number board Is also badly wanted at the Park, as well ns at Hastings, and it cannot be truthfully said that either of the Napier Clubs are up to date in the matter of appointments. Both Chler, the winner of the A.J.C. Derby, and I hurt fell, who scored in the Epsom Handicap, claim Ayr Laddie as their sire. He is ph I in-ported stallion, being by that fine hjrse Ayrshire, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby of 1888, from Catherine Douglas. Last season he finished fourth Ju the list of Mie cexsftd st unions, forty of his stock w inning 152 races Of the value of X13J193. In addition to the two mentioned, Ayr Laddie bus sired such good ones ns Cngon, Hot Air, Jolly Beggar, Pot lank, Hylvandvr, aud other winners.

Mr. T. H. Lowry’s champion gelding Bobrikoff was sauled up to contest the Park Stakes Handicap at Na’dar Park. The son of Finland had the welter weight of lOst 61b to carry, but was nevertheless a good favourite. Bobrikoff was out from the barrier like a two-year-old, and led the field to the first turn, where his rider pulled him back. All the way along the back stretch he was fighting for his head, and Jones made the mistake of pulling him about instead of letting Idm run along at his own pace. Crossing the top he ran up to the leader, San Pluie, ami headed her at the home turn. The pair then left the rails, and Sesitondale got through on the inside, and the trio had an interesting battle, necks separating them at the finish. It was a good jierformance on the part of Bobrikoff, for lie w’as conceding Seatoudale 481 b, and San Pluie 501 b. and ridden with a little better judgment would probably have won easily. The ehampion was a bit sore after the race, but was bettor the following day, and the race should improve him ■considerably. His next race will probably be in the Champion Plate at Wellington, after which, if everything is favourable, he will be taken to Kiccarton for Hie C.J.C. Spring Meeting. i 5:

TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

The chief concern of the trainers at Riccarton from now until after the Metropolitan meeting next month will be the question of a good training ground upon which to give their charges their final gallops for (he severe tasks in front of them. The ploughed gallop is in good order, and, with proper care and attention, it should remain so. The trial grass gallop is in fairly good order, but little need -he said of the wind and tan tracks, for at this period of Hie year they are usually so hard as to practically prohibit their use for really fast work. Unless the climatic conditions arc unusually favourable, the custodian will need to keep a careful watch on the tracks to maintain the desired good going. The visiting horses are here, and nearly all the Kiccarton stables are represented al the D-uuedin meeting, the result being that the local tracks are for the present rather quieter than usual. In the meantime, the horses remain tug at home are being pushed along for their approaching engagements. The Birkenhead gelding Rock Ferry, •which has been enjoying a fairly lengthy respite, ' will be put into active commission almost immediately. There are a few two-year-olds at Riccarton this season that show considerable promise, but until they have raced, their respective merits must be more or less a matter for argument. Four of the most likely, Night'watch, War Step, Immer. and Sartovna, are duo to race at the Dunedin meeting this week, and the form shown there should be an instructive guide for the future. I understand that after or during the Geraldine meeting Mr. J. U. N. Grigg purchased Foam Flake from Mr. E. H. Taylor, and the daughter of Calibre, which is still under the care of iA. McAulay, wilt run in the interests of the Squire of Longbcach at the Dunedin meeting. It will be remembered that Mr, Grigg disposed of Foam Flake after the autumn meeting of the Ashburton Racing Club, so evidently he has been favourably impressed with her recent form.

When submitted to auction Aimwell and Advance Guard failed to reach the reserve of owner (Mr G. P. Payne), and were withdrawn. Aiinwell subsequently found a purchaser in Mr. J..Westerman, who will leave the son of Soult under the care of R. Longley to prepare for future engagements. The Australian-bred I’ioneer, •which has been tn commission under the guidance of H. Carr, was also submitted to auction on Saturday, and found a purchaser at 115 guineas, at which figure he was, 1 think, well sold. Two of Hie best mares at Sir George Clifford’s Stonyhurst Stud have recently fouled. Madowla, by Trenton Azalea, has produced a colt to San Francisco, and De Lusive, by Trenton — Eleusis. a colt to Treadmill. Madowla ranks as one of the most successful matrons in the Dominion, her list of reps, including Qnarryman, King’s Guest. Glcnowlet, Kirriemuir, Glenuulloeli, Discipline, Taskmaster. Madam Madcap, and Masterpiece, while last year she had a coll to San Francisco. Delusive has not been nearly so prolific a breeder, but she ha* proved her worth by producing Miss Mis chief and Counterfeit to Treadmill. This year’s foal, which is a brother to the two performers named, is the first cult she has been responsible for. Another.of the Stonyliurst mares. Windwhistle, by Clanranald Weathereye, has foaled a colt to San Fran cisco. Only a few vacancies are left in Antagonist’s list for the season, which is limited to 25 mares, so it is evident that this young horse will have a good chance in his first year at the stud. 3 he withdrawal of Bon Ton and Bande-ira last week leaves Messrs. G. AV. and G. L. Stead without a rep. in the N.Z. Cup. Soult is scratched for all his engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Orange Lily, a four-year-old mare by Sant Ilario— Nithsevo. by Stepniak —Shepherdess, won a double at the Kurow meeting on Thursday, and she is spoken of as a useful sort. Good reports come from the South concerning Red Pennon, a full brother to Palisade by I'allis —Red Peony. Penates has taken tip stud duties in the Oamaru district. Aphaea, by Stepniak—Britoinart, has raced very poorly in recent, efforts, and she is to be retired to the stud. She will be mated this season with Armlet’s brother, Tawhiki.

WAIRARAPA NOTES.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) B. Keeper has taken a lease of the Malania i-yVoltigeur gelding which has been In charge of W. Hawthorne for some months past. The newcomer has been put into work, and will be a starter at some of the Wellington provincial meetings. . The name of Volatua has been bestowed upon the gelding. Woolnoth (The Workman —Pikihuia) has joined the active brigade again, and will be ■among the horses sporting silk at Masterton. N. Williams will give the Clareviile hors.'s Negative, Hilarian, San Port, and Leapuki a run at the Masterton meeting. All the horses are in splendid trim. The Clareviile mare Borsil Is making a good recovery from the accident she met with at Otaki, and should be ready for the summer meetings. Lord Palmer has been put into commission again at Clareviile, ami is in charge of F. Smith. The Lord Lodi —Minnie Fa.mer gelding looks ’n good condition. The six-year-old mare by Renown— Magis, and, therefore, a full-sister to Nedra, has been named 'Renowned May. The mare is Ji J. Gravestock’s stable. The Signalman--Julie mare in N. Williams’ stable is getting into shape, but, being a bigframed animal, will require time. She will not be raced till the meeting of the Taraiahi Carterton Club on December 26 Wairarapa stables are well represented in the entries for the Wellington Spring M eting. Among the horses engaged are Ladino, Negative, Leapuki, Longstop, Vena, Sin: pis, Sir Knox, Otter, Sir Solo, Overrate, British Maid, Suratura, Ovation, Imagination, Distinction, Dogfish, and Otaraia. NATIVE’S DISQUALIFICATION.

The lion. J. D. Ormond and Messrs. G. Hunter and C. P. Skerrett, K.C. (judges apopin ted by the Racing Conference), heard appeals lodged by Mr. Timi Puru, owner of The Native, and <?. Price, jockey, against the disqualification by the C.J.C. stewards of the horse and rider for alleged jostling in the New Zealand .Grand National Hurdle Race at Riccarton last August. 'J?he report of the judges is as follows:— “With reference to the appeals of Mr. James Bull and (has. Price, from the decision of the stewards of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and from the decision of the Canterbury Jockey Club District Committee, we are of opinion that, as an allegation has been made by Mr. Bull that he was not afforded a fair opportunity to have the evidence of the witnesses he named taken before the stewards, the appeal should he adjourned, and that the stewards of the Canterbury Jockey Club should be given the opportunity of answering the allegation. We direct that the stewards shall supply 1o the judges the minutes of the proceedings taken at the inquiry. We further direct that the note of the evidence- taken before us shall be available to the fi towards.”

AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB’S SPRING MEETING. SYDNEY, October 7. Tihe Australian Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting was continued to-day in glorious weather. In the presence of an enormous attendance. The track was in excellent order. None of the New Zealand horses scored but in the decision of the Metropolitan Shuja set the pace until right inside •the distance. At the iten-furlongs post the order was tihe same, except that Willow Greeu moved up, also Aurofodina and Alured. Here Duke Foote •was fairly well up. A little further on Hurtfell, Simla. Ocean Blue, and Irish Figure fell. Shuja continued in command past the mile-post, Blakeney. Piastre, Ladies’ Man. and Danaus being his nearest attendants, followed by Alured, Cisco, and Duke Foote. There was little alteration at the six-furlongs post, where Duke Foote was lying in sixth position. 'Shuja was still leading at the half-mile post, where Blakeney dropped back to fifth, behind Duke Foote. Shuja led Piastre and Duke Foote Into the straight. At the distance Shuja faltered, and Duke Foote made his run, followed by Piastre and Ladies’ Man. Under the whip Duke Foote went away, giving nothing a chance. He won by four lengths. In the decision of the Craven P.ate, Duke Foote once again demonstrated his brilliancy by winning the mile and a-quarter race in the fast time of 2.G 1-5. The Multiform colt Berra guon. who won the Breeders’ Plate on the opening day, demonstrated in a pointed manner that his victory in that race was in every way well deserved, as he carried a 141 b penalty in the Gi me rack Stakes, and scored in fine style. The New Zealand horse Shuja was responsible for an attractive performance in the Sydney Handicap. The son of Soult was always engaged in forcing the pace, and he scored an easy victory in fast time. The results are:— HURDLE RACE. About two miles and a-half. W. H. Mate’s Warwidgerie, 11.4 (Morgan) 1 Paisa no. 13.8 (T. The A.J.C. Spring Meeting was brought to a conclusion to-day in fine weather. There was a large attendance. Duke Foote was withdrawn from the Randwick Plate, which robbed the longdistance weight-for age race of much interest. Bright sunshine, a little on the warm side, attracted a large crowd to Caulfield to assist at the inauguration of the Melbourne spring carnival. No doubt the Amateur Club suffers through clashing with Sydney, which attracts Victoria’s best horses, as well as New Zealanders, by big weight-for age stakes. The Caulfield entries fell from 542 to 454, while Sydney’s increased from 876 to 1,030. Several Sydney trainers missed nominating for Flemington as well as «_aulfield, consequent on the clashing. Lady Medallist was the only Sydney horse performing in to-day’s weight-forage races. However, the programme to-day had little or no effect on the attendance. Both clubs will find extra stand accommodation too little to seat the crowds this year, which promises to be the biggest spring carnival in history. His Excellency the Governor-General Lord Denman and the State Governor, Sir John Fuller, were present. The following are the details of the racing: THE lOLO WELTER of 25Usovs. Seven furlongs. H. L.
