July 27. Afternoon Tea. An afternoon tea was given by Mrs. G. G. Stead at her residence, “Strowau Park," on Monday. The hostess wore a navy blue cloth costume. The guests included: Mrs. George Rhodes. Mrs. C. Reid, Mrs- Denniston, Mrs. A. AlurniyAynsley, Mrs. G. Alerton, Mrs. Reeve (Wanganui), Mrs. Nancarrow, Mrs. A. C. Wilson, Misses Cowlishaw, Reeves, Burns (2), Harley, Tabart (2), and Merton. On Tuesday afternoon Ab's. Stevenson (Fendalton) gave an afternoon tea in honour of Mrs. Reeve (Wanganui), who ■is staying with. Mrs. G. Alerton. Mrs. Stevenson wore a handsome gown of navy blue silk, veiled with ninon. A bridge tournament was held on Friday evening at Airs. Henry Woods’ house, at Avonside, between East v. West Fours, the former winning by several points. Thomas, Airs. Donald. Bachelors’ Ball. On Thursday evening the Christchurch Bachelors gave a very successful ball in 'the Art Gallery. The ball room was tastefully decorated with panels of pale green and white art muslin and baskets of ferns, the supper tables being arranged with primroses and violets. Studholme, Aliss Alacdonald and Aliss Sinclair-Thompson (Christchurch) went to Wellington for the races. Air. and Airs. Balfour Kinnear (Hawke’s Bay) are the guests of Airs. Courteney Nedwill (Christchurch). Airs. R. Rhodes (Blue Cliffs) and Airs. T. Rhodes (Timaru) have been the guests of Airs. George Rhodes at “Elmwood’’ (Christchurch). Airs, and Aliss Rich (Longbeaeh) are spending a short time in : Christchurch. Airs. Onslow has returned from her visit to Australia.
