July 12. Book Title Tea. On Monday, Mrs. Collins gave a small book title tea in honour of Mrs. Clere (Palmerston North), who is staying with her. Mrs. Collins wore a becoming black gown; Miss Collins, pale blue; and Miss Alice Collins, deep rose-pink frock. The guests included Mrs. J. G. Collins, Mrs. Wallwark, Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. Newell, Mrs. Leo, Mrs. Middleton, Mrs. Tyres, Mrs. Treleven, Mrs. Evans, Miss Thomas, Miss Pryde, Miss Ferguson, Miss Pender, Misses Guthrie (2), Miss Way. The first prize was won by Miss Ferguson, the second by Miss Pryde (Melbourne).
A Musical Afternoon. A musical afternoon was given by Mrs. Free, at her residence in Fendalton, on Thursday. An Entertainment. A drawingroom entertainment took place last night (Thursday, July 11th) at the Choral Hall. The recital was given by Miss Brenda Guthrie, for funds in aid of the Presbyterian Orphanage. There was a very large attendance, the audience being most sympathetic and enthusiastic. Miss Guthrie received quite a shower of bouquets, and at the close of the recital the Rev. T. Tait made a complimentary and appreciative little speech of thanks. Miss Guthrie wore a charming frock of white satin, with tunic of floral chiffon (rose design), edged with a deep hem of pink silk and white fringe of silk balls, the corsage being similarly ornamented. Amongst those present were: Dr. and Mrs. T. Guthrie, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hay, Miss Hay, Dr. and Mrs. Guthrie, Miss Guthrie, Mr. and Mrs. E. Hay, Mr. and Mrs. A. MeKellar, Mrs. T. Hay, Miss Hay, Mrs. J. Guthrie, Mrs. Russell, Mrs. and Miss Dunean, Mrs. and Miss Crystall, Mrs. Ferguson, Miss Orr, Mrs. and Miss Hunt, Miss Dunean, Mrs. Pyne, Misses Pyne (2), Miss Rolleston, Misses Anderson (2), Miss Wood, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas, Miss Thom as, Mrs. Matson, Mrs. Talbot, Dr. and Mrs. Gow, Miss Kiver, Mrs. Harvey. Miss Guthrie is an accomplished elocutionist and reciter, and went through a charmingly varied programme without a lapse of memory or hitch of any description—rather a feat for an amateur —with excerpts from such authors as Shakespeare (‘'Macbeth”), Charles Kingsley, R. L. Stevenson, Alfred Noyes, Alfred Austin, and various light and amusing items. Great preparations are being made for the plain and fancy dress balls in aid of the Plunket Nurses’ fund, which will take place on July 15 in the Art Gallery, the children’s fancy dress ball in the afternoon, and for grown-ups in the evening. There is talk af a bachelors’ ball being given at the end of this month. Personal. Mrs. Dixon (Fendalton, Christchurch) left last week for a visit to Australia. Mr. and Mrs. W. Stead (Gisborne), who have been staying with Mrs. Stead at Strowan Park (Christchurch), are now spending a short time in Dunedin. Mr. and Mrs. Guyan Macdonald (Geraldine) are in Christchurch. Mrs. Bremen (Australia), who lias been staying with Mrs. Male! and Mrs. Randall (Papanui), has left for South Canterbury. Mr. and Mrs. Hamish McLean (Mt. Hutt) have 'been spending a few days in Christchurch. Mrs, J. J. Kinsey (Christchurch) has been staying with friends in Napier. Miss Michie, who has been paying visits in Canterbury, has returned to Dunedin. Miss Craxton (Christchurch) is staying with friends in Ashburton. Mrs. E. Gualter (Geraldine) is the guest of Miss Hennah (Merivale). Mrs. Beals (Christchurch) is staying in Timaru. Miss Helmore (Fendalton) has taken a cottage for a few months on Cashmere Hills. Miss Pryde (Melbourne) is the guest of Airs. W. Thomas (Christchurch).
