May 24. Afternoon Tea. Mrs Jex Blake entertained a large number of friends at her pretty house last Thursday. The weather was most unfortunate, turning out wet and stormy towards the end of the afternoon. Mrs Jex Blake wore a becoming white silk dress ; made with a double skirt, and tiimmed with roses embroidered in pink and blue silk, and finished off with a girdle of white cord. The afternoon was a huge success, songs being sung by Mesdamcs Kennedy and Henderson, and two recitations by Miss G. Kennedy. A string band played during tea, which was served in the dining-room. Pink roses were arranged in silver vases on the table, with festoons of pale pink ribbon extending from the four corners. Mrs L.T. Symes, in whose honour the tea was given, wore a pale fawn face cloth coat and skirt, black beaver hat turned up in front, with an osprey of green; Mrs W. Barker, black velvet costume, trimmed with silk braid, black and white velvet toque, grey furs; Mrs J. B. Kells, black and white coat and skirt, black hat with feathers; Mrs E. Mathews, cream serge costume, with black braid and jet buttons, hat to match; Mrs F. Parker, navy blue costume, small hat trimmed with red velvet and red wings; Mrs G. J. Black, light grey costume, toque composed of black and white straw; Mrs J. Henderson, mole corduroy velvet, with gun metal buttons, velvet hat; Mrs Hookey, black and white frieze coat and skirt, black hat; Mrs E. 11. Mann, navy blue costume, large picture hat with a black feather; Mrs (Dr.) Carlyle Wilson, mole face cloth costume, black beaver hat with plumes; Mrs J. Symes, black shantung coat and skirt, picture hat with black feathers and lined with cerise velvet; Mrs F. H. W. Traill, navy blue coat and skirt, hat, muff and stole of coney seal; Miss D. Bright, saxe blue velvet, trimmed with oriental braid, with yolk and sleeves of fine net, black velvet hat with black feathers; Miss F. Davies, blue serge costume, black beaver hat with a niching of green shot ribbon, smart set of furs; Miss H. Nolan, cream serge coat and skirt, with vest of fine net and embroidery, black beaver hat with blue wings; Miss Z. Williams, green costume, hat with large bows of tartan ribbon; Miss L. White, bine coat and skirt, smart hat with bows of green and blue shot ribbon; Miss N. Davies, green coat and skirt, with facings of black satin, black satin hat with wreath of pink roses; Miss D. Bull, navy blue costume, large hat with bunches of cornflowers; Mrs Carter (Stratford), tweed costume, black hat with white feathers; Miss E. Brooke Taylor, green costume, black toque; Mrs J. Henderson, velvet dress, pretty hat with grey feathers and pink roses, sable furs; Mrs R. V. Gully, navy serge costume, large hat with white wings; Miss D. Berry, apple green silk dress, with yoke and sleeves of oriental embroidery, black hat; Miss Montague, mole velvet empire dress, black beaver hat with jet trimmings; Miss I. Coleman, old rose face cloth dress, hat to match, pretty muff and stole of velvet; Miss B. Bradley, brown velvet coat and skirt, velvet hat. Personal. Mrs McLean and Mrs C. Fenwick left on Wednesday for Christchurch.
