May 11. School Entertainment. On Saturday evening the pupils of thej Hangi-Ruru School gave a most enjoyable and highly successful entertainment in the Town Hall, before a large audience of parents and friends. The opening piece v as a “Welcome Speech” splendidly given by a small boy of five or six years (Master Russell), who showed a wonderful memory. Fanny Peake, aged fl, took the part of hostess and entertained a party of friends, the children being dressed up to represent elderly matrons. Misses V. Middleton and 0. Roberts gained a well-deserved encore for their vocal duct, "My Pretty Maid.’’ •‘Jessie’s Dream"’ was a musical illustration of popular fairy tales. Masters O. Broad and D. Day gave an amusing dialogue entitled "Costermongers.” The Misses K. Middleton and H. Taylor gave a similar item, "Boarding School Accomplishments.” An excellent display was given by the children of bandaging, also an-exhibition of Indian club-swinging was extremely good; and a fancy dance, "The Order of the Fan,” was very graceful. Pianoforte selections were rendered by the Misses Al. and K. Middleton, E. Reynolds. J. McCuliagh, I. and D. Ashwin. G. Barnett, L. Reynolds, N. Gane, C. Richards, E. Hammond, and 11. Taylor. At the close of the programme the guests and children were entertained at supper. Personal. Miss and Master Caldwell have gone to Auckland to stay with Mr and Mrs H. Tonks. Miss K. Tate, of Carterton, has returned home after spending three months in Cambridge with Mr and Mrs Caldwell. Mrs A. 11. Nieoll, with her small son, Warwick, has gone to stay with her father, Mr W. Wright, at Devonport, for s week or two. Dr. Tudehope, who has been assisting Dr. Roberts for some months, leaves for England next month. Mr and Mrs Caldwell have gone to Auckland, and are staying at “Cargen.”
