THE GAME IN WELLINGTON.

(By

ROMULUS.)

Brougham Hill Championships Completed. Y I'V HE remaining two matches in the I I J Combined Championship Doubles 1 were played on Saturday, thus completing that event, and the championships for the season. The stores were: — Semi-final. —iH. V. and Mrs M Howe v. J. Hunter and Miss Archer, ‘ Final.—h. V. and Mrs W. E. Howe v. E. Edwards and Miss Hayes, 6 —3, 7—9. 7 — 5 (20 games to 17). This, was a splendid match in which first-class tennis was displayed bv all four players. Edwards and Miss Hayes, who had combined splendidly in all their matches in the event, again performed very creditably, and looked to have the championship safe in the third set when leading 5 —3 and Edwards' service to follow. However, the Howe combination finished strongly, and. taking the next four games in succession, captured the set at 7—5. A complete list of the winners is appended. It will be noticed that Harry Howe, who won every event open to him last season, -was again very successful, being in the winning doubles in the Men's Championship and the Combined. while Mrs W. E. Howe was responsible for exactly the same record m the ladies' events: — MEN’S SINGLES. Final.—F. Laishlev v. L.' W. Hawkins, 6—2, 6—4. LADIES' SINGLES. Final.—Miss M. Davis v. Miss L. Morgan, 9—5. MEN'S DOUBLES. Final.—J. A, B. and H. V. Howe v. F. Laisltley and J. Hunter, 6—4, 7 —5. LADIES' DOUBLES. Final.—Mrs \V.’ E. Howe and Mi-s Morgan v. Misses Mack and E. Howe, 9—7. GO M BI NED I>OU BLES. Final.—H. V. Howe and Mrs W. E. Howe v. E. Edwards and Miss Hayes, 6—3, 7—9. 7—5. University Championships. MEN’S SINGLES. Final.—This event was completed at C hristchurch on Saturday, 13th April, on the Canterbury College courts, Hagley Park, when L. S. Jennings defeated T. D. Smith, 6—o, 6—3. A noticeable feature of this year’s tournament at Dunedin was the fact that Canterbury College won the whole of the five championwlrips, L. S. Jennings and Miss Cross winning every event in which they completed, Singles, Combined, and Doubles (the former with T. D. Smith and the latter with Miss Jamieson). Other Tournaments. OTAGO. The finals of the Men’s Championship mid Handicap Singles were played in Dunedin last week, Warne Pearse having journeyed South from Temuka to contest both finals. In the Championship he defeated 8. N. Brown (Balniacewen Club. Dunedin) 6—3, 6—o, o—6.0 —6. 10—8 (22 games to 17), and, having expressed himself as thoroughly fit, proceeded to take on R. S. Brown in the Handicaps. Pearse (owe 40) and Brown (owe 30 3-6; were the rankings, Brown just winning. 9—7. The South Canterbury representative’s success in Hie Championship is very popular in Dunedin, lie has been run-ner-up in the Otago Singles Championship for five of the last six years, and his genial personality and sport-manlike disposition have made him a welcome figure at Otago’s Tournaments, a remark which also applies to any other meeting patronised by Pearse. WANGANUI. ' The uncompleted events in the Easter Tournament were got of! at Wanganui on the 13ttI."A. Powdrell and Mrs. Powdrell journeying from Patea to compete, ju three finals, Powdrell losing the Men’s

Championship Singles, while tiie Taranaki combination was successful in the two Combineds — Championship and Handicap. The scores in the Championships were: — MEN'S SINGLES. Final. —Butterwtorth (Wanganui) v. Powdrell (Patea). 7—5. 6—4. COMBINED DOUBLES. Final.—Powdrell and Mrs. Powdrell (Patea) v. Clark and Mrs. Gordon (Wanganui), 6—l, 6—4. HAWKE'S BAY CLUB. The Easter Tournament of the Hawke's Bay L.T.C. was played off on the Napier South Courts, the meeting proving both successful and enjoyable. Results of the finals were: — CHAMPIONSHIPS. LADIES' SINGLES. Miss Baird v. Miss Clark. 9—l. COMBINED DOUBLES. C. J. Tipping and Miss Baird V. G. Ebbett and Mrs Maddison, 6 —4, 4—6, 6—o. HANDICAPS. MEN’S SINGLES. T. S. Atkinson (20) v. M. Fenwick (10 I . 6 —o, 4—3. LADIES’ SINGLES. Miss Baird (owe 20) v. Miss E. Williams (rec. 30), 66—64. MEN’S DOC B LES. C. J. Tipping and G. Ebbett (owe 40) v. S. B. Ludbrook and A. Cato (rec. 10), 70—65. LADIES’ DOUBLES. Misses Dewes and G. Hill (5) v. Mrs. Maddison and Miss Baird (owe 20), 70 —66. C OMBINED DOUBLES. Sinclair and Miss Nevill (5) v. Ludbrook and Miss Snow Clark (10), 60— 50. THE GAME IN AUCKLAND (By Footfault.) The end of the season is in sight,, and it will finish up on Saturday next. Last Saturday the weather was beautifully fine, but the courts were rather heavy. The attendances on the various lawns were not up to the usual standard, as a large number, of players who take up winter games had already forsaken the raequet for other forms of sport. Owing to the bad weather we have experienced, club tournaments have been unnecessarily prolonged, and many interesting matches have had to be fought. out on bad courts. Club members should profit by the lesson learned this season, and in future it would be much better to get club tournaments under way at the beginning of the season. Players are much keener then, and matches could be well advanced before the big break comes in the holiday season. I understand the local association is seriously considering the advisability of •securing grounds to lay out a number of courts solely for inter-club matches. The Remuera polo ground, Cornwall Park, and Stanley-street are spoken of as being possible spots where a number of good courts could l>e laid out. Some‘thing will have to be done in this direction, for there is no doubt that the time taken up by inter-dub competitions robs the non-competing players of a lot of play on Saturday' afternoons. Complaints have been frequent throughout the season, especially in the clubs close to town, where the aeeoiiimcylation is very limited.

A syndicate is arranging to lay out bowling greens, croquet and tennis courts at Takapuna, to be ready for use neyt season. Now that a good boat and tram service is running to the Lake, it would no doubt prove to be a popular place as the convincing ground for inter-club contests. In Wellington, all inter-club contests are played over at Day’s Bay, and, from all accounts, the distance does not interfere with the interest in Wie contests. There are far more clubs competing there than at Auckland. ■ The leader of the Takapuna scheme, I understand, is u prominent member . .of t.he ( aniton Bowling Club. . With, a'i view; to. fustepng interest amongst the junior Udy members of the

Devonport Club. Mrs Cooper has donated a ,prize for the best singles player, and the final will take, place next Saturday afternoon. AUCKLAND CLUB. The final of the Auckland C tub's singles was played on Saturday last, when Webster beat Snelling. 3 sets to 1. Webster has played very consistently this season, and lias improved wonderfully. His win over the holder of the championship was full of merit. The Auckland Club has had a very successful season, winning the second grade championship, and its memliers figured prominently in the handicap and championship tournaments. The ' lawns will be closed on Saturday next. WEST END. The. West End Club's tournament is nearly completed, only three finals remaining unplayed. The following are the results to date: — ■Men’s Championship Singles.—Semifinal: Dr. Keith beat Snelling, 6—2, 6—2. Dr. Keith and Quinnell will meet in the final, and the former will probably win. Men’s Handicap Singles (A Grade). — Final: Quinnell, owe 40, beat Fee, owe 15, 6—o, 6—2. B Grade.—Final: M. Alison, scratch, J eat Diekeson, owe 15, 6—2, 6—5. Ladies’ Championship Singles.—Final: Miss A. Gray beat Miss Mace. Ladies' Handicap Singles.—Semi-final: Miss H. Warnock, received 15, beat Miss Mace owe 304. 9 —2. Miss Warnock and Miss Nelson meet in the final round. . Ladies’ Handicap Doubles.—Final: •Misses Foote and Gray, owe 40, beat Misses Nelson and Court, scratch. 6—l, 6—6, 6-—4.
