February 27. Miss Petersen. /TY RS. LOVIS MYERS, of “The ill Mount," Symnnds-street, gave a large afternoon tea onTues- / day. in honour of Miss Thelma Petersen, the clever little singer, and I am sure everyone was simply astounded to hear such a voice. Alias Thelma Petersen looked verydainty in her frock of white ch’arnieuse. veiled with ninon, and a pretty pink hat. Tea was laid in the diningroom and morning room, both tables being decorated with asters, one in pink and the other in yellow. Pink tiger lilies were used with good effect in the reception rooms. Aliss Alda Ralph and Miss Marjorie Lusher played, and Airs. Rosenthal sang, so we had quite a feast of good things. Mrs. Alyers wore a very handsome black toilette, relieved with white. Among the guests were: —'Miss Stapleton-Cot-ton, who wore a coat and skirt in a pretty shade of Nattier blue, with touches of orange, and a pretty hat to tone with it; Lady Lockhart wore saxe blue eharmeuse, with tunic of golden silk net, with wide border ot lovely Eastern embroidery, and a hat to match; Airs. Hope Lewis wore a verysmart frock of black and white ninon, with bands of lovely lace, and daintytouches of cerise, very smart amethyst hat massed with shaded red roses; Airs. Leo. Myers wore a greytoilette; Airs. Petersen wore cream Shantung, and a floral toque; Airs. Browning, dark grey- •Shantung, black hat; Airs. Billy- Watson wore champagne crepe de chine, with a lovelyblack hat; Airs. Grant wore a smart opal-tinted frock, and a bla-ek hat; Alias Edith Isaacs, grey ninon over white, and a lovely grey- hat with satin roses; Airs. Devore wore a handsome black toilette; Aliss Alarjorie Lusher wore a pretty frock of white, veiled with blue, and a black hat; Aire. L-. Benjamine; Airs. Lusher; Aliss Buckland; Airs. B. Kent; Airs. Nelson; Airs. ArchdaleTayler. Garden Party and Golf Croquet. The beautiful grounds of “Hurstmere” presented a most picturesque scene on Saturday- afternoon, when Airs. Grimwade entertained a large number of friends at a garden party and golf-croquet. The afternoon proved ideal for such an al fresco fete. Delightful arrangements had been made by the hostess for the entertainment of her guests, who thoroughlyappreciated the lovely garden and surroundings. The beautifully-kept lawns and extensive flower borders of ’‘Hurstmere” extend from the house in a series of terraces to the margin of Lake Takapuna. Golf-croquet was played by a number of ladies and gentlemen, which resulted in Airs. Oliphant carrying off the handsome prize. On a gramaphone kindly lent by Air. Hooper some excellent records were given and much enjoyed. A motor-launch and boats with young people steamed and pulled to and fro on the Lake. At 4 o’clock a delicious tea was served on the lawn. The proceeds of the tickets are to go in aid of the restoration of the Long Bay Church. Airs. Grimwade wore a pretty pale grey gown with hat en suite. Among those present were: Alesdames Parr. Alonckton, Alorgan, Heather, Hooper, Wilson, Gorton, Hart, Frater. Oliphant, Watt. Newcombe. Sharland. Alasfen, Oxley, O. Brown, Easton, Bull. Buchanan, Simpson E. W. Alison, Esdaile, Warren Blythe, Horrocks, Dryden, (looper. Misses Hutton, Courtayne. Kennedy-, Berry, Oliphant, Alacky. Mt. Eden Croquet Club. The Alt. Eden Croquet Club gave an “At Home” on Thursday of last week, the party being a complete success. A committee of ladies, headed by Airs Hudson, wife of the president, and Aliss Esam (secretary) carried out the arrangements in a most capable manner and everything went off without a hitch. There wore twenty-four visiting players. Progressive games were played during the afternoon, and the prizes were won by the following ladies : Aliss Fryer, from Onehunga. first prize in A division; Airs Speight was second. Mrs Mainland won first prize in the B division ami Mi-s Hodge second. A delicious tea was served during th" afternoon. Afternoon Tea. Mrs Archdale Tayler gave a pleasant little tea on Friday and’during the afternoon we had a great musical treat. Mrs Markstadt, a recent arrival from London, •whom I am pleased to say has decided to settle in Auckland, sang to us most charmingly. Mrs Markstadt has a most delightful contralto voice and a charming personality. Mrs Tayler sang in her usual pleasing way and the afternoon was all too short. Our hostess was assisted by her three sisters, —Mrs Ashton, Mrs Howard and Mrs Robertson. Tennis Picnic. The Parnell Tennis Club gave another of their jolly tennis picnics. This time there Were guests from most of the clubs, Who were invited to send some of their A grade players. The result was some Well contested games, for the weaker of the A players were for the nonce converted into B players, so the games were Well balanced. The -weather, though doubtful, kept fine till the end of the afternoon and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Three players tied for first place—Mrs Cooper, and the Misses Barstow and Cumming: The draw was won by Miss Barstow who took first and Miss Cumming second. The two prizes in the B Grade were won by Miss Foote and Miss Mattie Walker. Mr Baker, a memtier of the club, very kindly presented two of the prizes. Among the players fete: Mesdames W. R. Bloomfield, Holmes, Kent, Cooper, Stride, Misses Maty Fra ter (in whose capable hands all the arrangements Were left), Minnie §teel| Woodroffe, Mace, (Sortie, Hull, Cooke, Foote, (Philcox, Harvey, Barstow, Myra Reid, Crowther, Madge Peacock, (Metcalfe, Atkinson, Abbott, McCormick (2), Cumming. d. Personal. Tire parishioners of Holy Trinity, Devoiip'ort, welcomed their vicar, Rev. Mark Sutton, back from Ids trip to India, Europe and the United Kingdom. Mr Sutton whilst in England preached for our late Bishop, Dr. Neligan, who is now quite restored to health. Many Auckland folk, especially musical ones, will have read with regret of the death of Dr. A. Napier McLean ip Wellington. Some years ago Dr. McLean, With his sisters and Mr -Stuart McLean, used to delight people with their music. Indeed he was a gifted man and was A most charming companion. Much sympathy is felt for his widow, who was Misg Rena Butt. Miss Maud Browning is at present on a visit to Wellington where she is the quest of Mrs Miles, Hobson-street. The annual meeting of the Victoria League is to be held at the Piccadilly Tea Rooms on the evening of March 7th. Lady Islington has intimated her intention to be present, and His Excellency has been good enough to promise to attend conditionally up>n 1. - public duties releasing him from reside : e at Wellington.
