PERSONAL NOTES

The Hon. Eyre-Hudson, Colonial Secra* fory of Fiji, was a passenger by the Makura for Australia on a holiday, trip. He will return to Fiji via Tasmania and the South Island of New; Zealand.

Mr. A. B. Joske, a member of the firm of Brown and Joske, merchants, of Suva, passed through by the Makura, on his way to Sydney, whither he is bound on a combined holiday and business visit, from which he will return in a few weeks.

Mr. J. D. Henry, the oil expert, who spent some weeks in the oil-bearing districts of New Zealand last year, arrived by the Makura last week on a further visit of investigation in this country, being met at the steamer by Mr. H. J. Brown, chairman of the British Empire Oil Fields, Ltd. Mr. L. I. Ziman, son of Mr. Jacob Ziman, of Auckland, left for London by the s.s. Otaki last week, having received an appointment on that ship. Mr. Ziman is a member of the erack University Hockey Club senior eleven, and has been a prominent member of the Club for the last seven years. In wishing him success in his new departure, the members of the Club presented Mr. Ziman with a handsome travelling-rug.

News comes from San Francisco of a motor cycling accident near San Jose, California, by which an ex-Aucklander, Mr. George R. Hammon, lost his life. It would appear that he was either trying to race a train for a level crossing, or was unaware that the road crossed the railroad, but he was struck by a Southern Pacific train at full speed on the crossing after having cycled parallel with it for some distance, and was killed instantly. Mr. Geo. Fenwick, managing director of the “Otago Daily Times,” left for the South by the mail train last week after spending a few days in Auckland. Captain Carpenter, assistant adjutant and quartermaster-general, Auckland district. has been granted a month's leave of absence, his duties in the meantime being undertaken by Captain Barton, N.Z. staff corps. Mr. F. J. Kirby, editor of the “New Zealand Tinies,” has retired from the position owing to ill-health, and will be succeeded by Mt. P. C. Freeth, who formerly occupied the editorial chair. Mr. Kirby will, after taking a holiday, resume his old position on the paper as associate editor.

Mr. W. W. Suttin, of the post and telegraph staff, Lyttelton, who has been transferred to Auckland, was presented with a handsome piece of silver plate as a slight token of the respect and esteem of his fellow-workers of the “Lyttelton office, the postmaster (Mr. Keele) making the presentation. Mr. David E. Hansen, M.A., M.Sc., DJ., who has been appointed principal of the day Technical College at Invercargill, is an Aucklander, and has just returned to New Zealand after spending two years in England and on the Continent. Mr. Hansen’s testimonials from the New Zealand and German Universities are of a very high class. Mr. H. S. Williams, ex-chairman of the Bay of Islands County Council, was at the Council meeting on Monday week, presented by the present chairman, Mr. W. Stewart, on behalf of the residents of the district, with an illuminated address, handsomely framed, conveying the recognition of the subscribers respecting the valuable services he had rendered to the country during the twenty-one years he had been assoeiaed with the Council, together with expressions of •goodwill and esteem, and the hope that his impaired health wopld be fully re-

stored. A gold watch had previously been presented to Mr. Williams and several pieces of silver plate to Mrs. Williams. The address, which was the work t*f Mi. J, Slator, of Auckland, was much admired, a little picture of Bussell, with the s.s. Clansman at the wharf, beino embodied in the initial letter, Mr. Wib liams having been for many years the agent for the Northern S.S. Company at Bussell.

The Bev. C. E. Beecroft was a passenger on Friday by the Mantua from Colombo.

Colonel and Mrs. D. J. Collins, of Wellington, are stopping at the Grand Hotel for a few da vs.

The Rev. ‘.Scott West, who was for some years minister in charge of St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Auckland arrived from Sydney by the P. and O. steamer Mantua last week, with Mrs. Scott M est, on a holiday visit. Messrs. W. A. and C. K. Wigram, and Miss J. M. Wigram, of Christchurch, who have been on a visit to Europe, -returned by the P. and O. steamer Mantua. Mr. Samuel Nivison, formerly a mem- • iber of the London Stock Exchange, whose firm, B. Nivison and Co., made a feature of dealings in Australian .stocks, was a passenger by the Mantua from London on a holiday visit to the Dominion, after touring which he purposes spending several' weeks in Australia ibefore returning Home. Professor Grant. Professor of History at Leeds University, contemplates visiting New Zealand this year, and will probably deliver lectures at the various colleges. Mr. H. F. Von Haast, a member of the Victoria College Council, who is leaving for England shortly, will interview Professor Grant during his visit Home in regard to arrangements for the professor’s proposed lectures. Dr. Karl Kumm, the noted missionary and explorer, who has been on a lecturing tour through Australasia, is a passenger by the Manama for Vancouver, his intention being to lecture through America. Dr. Karl Kumm, it will be interesting to know, is on his wedding trip, having been married in Melbourne shortly before leaving Australia.
